American Idol: My First Episode Left Me With More Questions Than Answers
To set the record straight: I’ve never watched a complete episode of American Idol during its 2025 airing or at any other time in the past. However, I can recall the excitement when it first aired and was well-aware of its massive popularity, particularly in the early 21st century.
To clarify, I’ve got a general understanding of the show’s format and what the singing competition is about, but I’ve never watched an entire episode before Sunday. Frankly, there were plenty of moments where I found myself scratching my head in confusion and asking questions like “What just happened?” or “How does that work?” However, this experience has certainly been intriguing!
I Wasn’t Actually Watching For The Competition, Which Leads To My First Question
As a film enthusiast, I must confess that this week’s show was a letdown for me, especially when it came to the announcement of the 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Instead of a grand unveiling, it felt more like a quick name-dropping session by host Carson Daly. I expected a montage of the artists, some engaging stories, or even just more photos of them, but all I got was a list of names with one photo each and a swift move to another segment of the show. It would have been great if they had acknowledged the other nominees who missed out or talked about the fan vote, which seems quite incongruous for a show like American Idol.
It seems that although the focus of the show wasn’t primarily on the inductees themselves, I had assumed that given its title “The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Show,” there would be more than just a straightforward listing of names for the artists being inducted. Perhaps they didn’t believe that the seven honorees – Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Cyndi Lauper, Soundgarden, The White Stripes, OutKast, and Joe Cocker – would resonate much with viewers of American Idol. Regardless, it was somewhat frustrating.

What Was Carrie Underwood Wearing?
The opening act featured Carrie Underwood singing “Alone,” Heart’s timeless hit that played a significant role when she clinched the victory 20 years ago. It’s hard to believe it’s been two decades since her breakthrough, isn’t it? I must admit, her performance was truly electrifying and undoubtedly the standout moment of the show for me. Her attire for the performance was impressive, but I’m curious about what she wore as a judge during the rest of the show – this being her inaugural season in that role.
It appears as if the show’s topic was “rock and roll,” and Underwood chose to don a “1980s Rock Singer” costume from a Spirit Halloween store. She accessorized with a bandana and an outfit reminiscent of Axl Rose during his prime in Guns ‘N Roses. In contrast, judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan opted for more conventional attire, which made Underwood’s eccentric fashion choice all the more noticeable.

Why Is This Show So Sparkly?
During the two-hour program’s midpoint, it was then that I became particularly aware of the show’s dazzling elements. Most costumes shimmered with glitter and sequins, including Carrie Underwood’s microphone which had been embellished with rhinestones. What caught my eye next were the lights on the stage, they seemed to mimic the twinkling stars in the night sky. It was almost overpowering, but I have a fondness for all things sparkly.
The entirety of American Idol appears excessively flashy. In certain aspects, it’s overwhelming, and the glossiness of everything underscores this. Personally, I’ve always found the polish of the show off-putting. It seems inorganic to me, as if it lacks authenticity. The performers are undeniably talented singers and entertainers, but the packaging feels overly artificial.

Does Lionel Richie Talk Over Everyone All The Time?
Initially, let me express my profound affection for Lionel Richie. As a child, he was flourishing in his solo career, and I’ve always appreciated his music, even tracing its roots back to The Commodores. It’s wonderful to see him maintain cultural significance among a new generation, as it’s well-deserved. However, I often find myself questioning why he frequently remarks on the other judges during the show.
Does he constantly engage in this behavior? Is it hard for people to tell him to quiet down? In every instance when Luke Bryan or Carrie Underwood spoke, there was Richie with his affirmative “yes” or repetitive “mmmhmmmm,” which often felt more like nuisance comments from the audience. Although I appreciate that the judges are no longer rude as they used to be, Richie’s continuous remarks were quite disruptive.

Finally, Why Is All The Music Kind Of The Same?
In the context of a program focusing on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it appears that the music featured on American Idol tends to have a striking similarity. Primarily, it can be categorized into two genres: grand, theatrically-styled pieces showcasing impressive vocal gymnastics, and country ballads. One might wonder why there’s less variation in the musical styles displayed?
The inductees for the Hall of Fame demonstrate an impressive variety. One might wonder, for instance, why there aren’t more hip hop artists, or groups like The White Stripes or Soundgarden. Chris Cornell from Soundgarden was known for his exceptionally powerful voice, and no one seems to match that in the current lineup, as far as I know (and I acknowledge my limited knowledge). Intriguingly, has a rapper ever been inducted? It’s not just about singing, so why should all performers be the same type?
Regardless of other points, what truly impressed me was the sheer skill of the band. Pondering deeply, I realized how much effort goes into their work. With an impressive repertoire to learn and rehearse for a season of American Idol, not to mention collaborating with numerous singers, they must meticulously tailor the music to suit each one. Their talent and dedication deserve recognition (and fair compensation), though it seems they may not always receive enough.
In the end, the show didn’t manage to win me over completely, but I do understand better why it enjoys such widespread popularity. It’s undeniable that there is an abundance of raw talent shining from all aspects of the show – from the judges, the band, and the contestants alike. Perhaps they could tone down the sparkle a bit.
