AMC nabs rights to Emily Carpenter’s southern gothic horror novel Gothictown
As a fan who has always been captivated by Southern Gothic narratives and their eerie charm, I am beyond excited about AMC’s latest project, “Gothictown.” With my extensive experience of binge-watching shows like “The Walking Dead” and “Fear the Walking Dead,” I can confidently say that this new series seems destined to join the ranks of AMC’s exceptional roster.
AMC is expanding its collection of southern gothic TV series by developing a new show called “Gothictown“. This production will be based on Emily Carpenter’s forthcoming novel with the same title.
According to Deadline, the project is currently in its initial phases, yet it has appointed Abby Ajayi as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer for the series.
According to GoodReads, the novel Gothictown focuses on a restaurant owner named Billie Hope, who is offered a strange and financially beneficial proposal from an organization called the “Juliana Initiative”. This group claims to be dedicated to revitalizing the town’s economy following a pandemic.
As a fan excitedly imagining myself as Billie, I can’t help but be thrilled about the opportunity that presents itself: a chance to buy a grand Victorian house for just $100, which also opens up the possibility of starting a new restaurant. However, upon setting foot in the picturesque town of Juliana, Georgia, my heart skips a beat as I start noticing oddities about this seemingly idyllic community. These strange occurrences have me increasingly concerned that my family and I might be trapped here forever.
Gothictown seems ideally suited to align with its other TV shows that delve into Southern Gothic themes, specifically those within the Anne Rice Universe on the network. This universe encompasses shows like the Mayfair Witches, Interview with the Vampire, and the forthcoming Talamasca series.
Ajayi is a writer-producer who has earned an Emmy Award nomination, primarily recognized for her work on series such as ‘Inventing Anna’, ‘The Riches’, ‘How to Get Away with Murder’, and ‘The First Lady’. The concept of ‘Gothictown’ was developed under the initial agreement between AMC and Made With Love Media, where they acquired the rights to produce ‘Gothictown’. The same company is also responsible for creating the widely praised Netflix movie ‘They Cloned Tyrone’.
It is anticipated that Gothictown will be released on March 25, 2025 through Kensington Publishing Corp. The novel has been described on Kensington’s website as reminiscent of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and Gillian Flynn’s “Sharp Objects,” and it has been chosen as a “Publishers Marketplace BUZZ BOOKS Selection.
The book can be pre-purchased at various bookstores such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble, where it is now available for preorder.
