Amazon's Poltergeist television series lands Prison Break and Supernatural writers

As a die-hard horror enthusiast who’s spent countless nights huddled under blankets, rewatching classics like “Poltergeist” (1982), I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming television series! With a career that’s seen me immersed in the world of both popular shows and iconic horror franchises, I’ve developed an uncanny ability to predict which reboots will be worth the wait.

According to Variety’s latest report, the long-awaited Poltergeist TV series is said to be progressing in production. On August 19th, it was exclusively disclosed that Amazon MGM Studios has secured showrunners for the upcoming program – Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson. These two will not only oversee the project but also write and serve as executive producers. The series is being produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television.

As of now, specifics about the upcoming show remain undisclosed, but we can confirm that it is inspired by the 1982 Tobe Hooper-directed film known as “Poltergeist”. This movie is recognized as a horror masterpiece and has further developed into two sequels, namely “Poltergeist II: The Other Side” and “Poltergeist III”, as well as a 2015 remake.

As a devoted admirer, let me share that I’ve penned stories for numerous hit shows, such as the pulse-pounding espionage drama Nikita on The CW and Fox’s gripping saga Prison Break. Moreover, there’s Thompson, whose penmanship is legendary in the comic book realm, having brought characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange to life. His contributions also extend to Supernatural and its offshoot series The Winchesters.

Currently, it seems like an excellent moment for horror sequels based on legacy franchises. Notable series are seeing new installments, spin-offs, and other developments. For instance, a prequel series for Friday the 13th is still being developed on Peacock, while HBO is working on a prequel to It called Welcome to Derry. Additionally, the Alien franchise has recently released a new film titled Alien: Romulus, with an FX series in development named Alien: Earth.

Poltergeist is another addition to the long line of follow-ups that never seem to end, but I couldn’t be happier! The original is one of my top horror films ever, and I’m eager to find out what they have in store for a TV adaptation.

Back in ’82, I found myself deeply engrossed in a flick about the Freeling clan. Starring JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, Beatrice Straight, and Heather O’Rourke, this movie was set in a cozy suburban California abode. But things took a spooky turn as our family faced off against some mischievous spirits, or poltergeists, who had it out for their youngest member, Carol Anne. Communicating through a TV, these spectral beings snatched her away, leaving the rest of us in a panic. To rescue Carol Anne, we joined forces with a parapsychologist on this supernatural mission.
