Amazon’s Like a Dragon show trailer premieres at SDCC 2024

As a longtime fan of the Yakuza video game series, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Like a Dragon. Having grown up with Kazuma Kiryu and his friends since the first game in 2005, it’s surreal to see this beloved franchise make its way to the small screen.

Get ready for another new adventure with Kazuma Kiryu — this time in a live-action TV show.

In June, we discovered that Amazon planned to create a live-action Japanese series based on the Like a Dragon (formerly known as Yakuza) video game franchise. We knew it would consist of six episodes split into two sets of three episodes. The first set was scheduled for release on Oct. 24, with the remaining episodes following on Nov. 1. At Comic-Con in San Diego, we gained additional information – primarily that Kento Kaku from “Kamen Rider Drive” would portray Nishiki, a complex former friend of Kiryu’s in the series, which appears to be an adaptation of the initial game, “Yakuza”.

The popular Japanese gangster soap opera, “Like a Dragon,” has achieved great success, not only in Japan but also internationally. With nine primary games, numerous spin-offs, and various adaptations into other media, this series has left an indelible mark. For our project, it’s worth mentioning that Takashi Miike directed the movie adaptation, “Like a Dragon: The Movie,” based on the first game. Our latest addition to the list of favorites is “Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth,” the most recent entry in this captivating series and one of our top picks for the year.

Following the success of Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout game adaptation, and with growing entertainment industry interest in bringing major video games to life on screen, enters the Like a Dragon series.

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: The game’s creative direction is led by Masaharu Take, while the story was crafted by Sean Crouch and Yugo Nakamura. The Japanese script, on the other hand, was penned by Yoshida Yasuhiro and Yamada Kana.

As an avid fan, I’m eagerly wondering if the upcoming live-action adaptation will incorporate the beloved mini-games from the series. The goofy charm of Dondoko Island and the quest to master Sujimon are among my favorite parts of the game. Considering that the show is based on the first game, it seems unlikely, but a fan can hope!
