Amazon’s ‘God of War’ Series Adds Ryan Hurst as Kratos

The upcoming God of War TV series is continuing to build its cast. Following the announcement of Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Amazon MGM Studios has now cast Max Parker as Heimdall, the primary villain for the first season. Heimdall, a god and son of Odin who watches over Asgard, can foresee future events. He feels overlooked and is constantly striving to climb the ranks. Parker is known for his role in the Netflix series Boots, which aired for one season last year.

Following an announcement from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, Ryan Hurst will be playing Kratos in the upcoming God of War series. Hurst is widely known for his roles as Opie in Sons of Anarchy and Beta in The Walking Dead. He’s also appeared in films like Saving Private Ryan and Remember the Titans, and will be in Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey. Interestingly, Hurst is already familiar with the God of War universe, having previously voiced the character of Thor in God of War: Ragnarök back in 2022. Previously, Terrence C. Carson originally voiced Kratos, with Christopher Judge taking on the role since 2018.

Frederick E.O. Toye, the director known for his work on shows like Shōgun, Fallout, and The Boys (and an Emmy Award winner!), will direct the first two episodes of the God of War series. Ronald D. Moore, who created Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, will oversee the show as showrunner, executive producer, and a writer.

The new series, God of War, centers on Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Throughout their travels, Kratos attempts to guide Atreus in becoming a worthy god, while Atreus tries to help Kratos reconnect with his humanity. The show is based on the critically acclaimed 2018 God of War game, which successfully reimagined the franchise that first launched in 2005. Here’s a description of Kratos’ character:

Kratos, the main character of the God of War series, was born a Spartan warrior and became a god. He led armies for Sparta until he made a deal with the god of war, Ares, trading his soul for victory in battle. Over the course of ten popular games, Kratos defeated countless enemies – humans, monsters, and even gods – becoming a well-known figure celebrated for his strength, quiet demeanor, and difficult history. The new live-action God of War series will continue his story, focusing on his relationship with his ten-year-old son, Atreus, as seen in the most recent games. This father-son bond marks a fresh direction for the series and will be central to the show’s plot.

Originally intended as a movie, God of War is now being developed as a TV series by PlayStation Studios. In October 2024, Ronald D. Moore joined the project after the initial showrunners – Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (The Expanse) and Rafe Judkins (Wheel of Time) – left due to differing creative visions with Prime Video. While casting is happening now, a start date for filming hasn’t been announced. Prime Video has already committed to two seasons of the series.
