As a seasoned gamer and ardent fan of both literature and television, I find myself at a crossroads with the recent developments surrounding Neil Gaiman and his works. The allegations against him have left me, quite frankly, bewildered and disheartened.
As a gamer, I just found out that last week, Disney suspended its live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book” due to allegations of sexual misconduct against the author. Now, in a similar move, Amazon Prime Video has decided to postpone the third and final season of “Good Omens.
63-year-old British author has been confronted with accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior, including instances of non-consensual intercourse and sexual misconduct over the past few months. In a July report from Tortoise Media, Gaiman was alleged to have sexually assaulted an 18-year-old woman in 2003, and more recently, a 23-year-old woman named Scarlett in 2022.
In light of these accusations, it appears that studios are anxious about the approaching turbulence and seem to be trying to disengage from Neil Gaiman’s works as quickly as they can, or at least take a step back. Thanks to adaptations of his novels like Good Omens, American Gods, and Coraline, Gaiman has become one of the most recognized authors in Hollywood, with his work being adapted consistently for several decades.
However, it appears there’s a shift in the production status of some beloved series. Disney+ has put a hold on “The Graveyard Book”, Netflix cancelled “Dead Boy Detectives” which might be due to low viewership, and now according to Deadline, “Good Omens 3” is on pause as well.
The television show “Good Omens,” adapted from a novel by Neil Gaiman in collaboration with Terry Pratchett, was highly successful on Amazon Prime Video. Featuring Michael Sheen as the character Aziraphale, an angel, and David Tennant as Crowley, a demon, the series gained a dedicated fanbase. For its second season, currently airing, Gaiman penned an entirely original story beyond the events of the book. The show left viewers on a suspenseful note with a rift appearing between the unexpected couple Aziraphale and Crowley. The third and final season is expected to follow.
It’s important to clarify that Good Omens season 3 has not been cancelled, but instead, production has been temporarily halted. Given Neil Gaiman’s role as executive producer, writer, and showrunner for the series, it is understandable that Amazon Prime Video would postpone its release.
