Amazon MGM Studios’ ‘Project Hail Mary’ rockets to the top of the box office

This weekend, “Project Hail Mary,” starring Ryan Gosling, became the number one movie in theaters, a significant success for Amazon MGM Studios.

The new film starring Ryan Gosling as a science teacher sent on a space mission to save the world earned $80.5 million in the U.S. and Canada, making it the year’s biggest opening weekend so far. It made a total of $140.9 million worldwide.

“Project Hail Mary” is based on a novel by Andy Weir, who also wrote the popular book and movie “The Martian.” The film’s strong opening weekend is great news for Amazon MGM Studios, as they invested heavily in promoting it as a major blockbuster they were capable of creating.

Kevin Wilson, head of theatrical distribution at Amazon MGM Studios, stated that the strong audience response to ‘Hail Mary’ confirms their expectations for the film. He noted the enthusiastic reactions in theaters, positive audience scores, and strong word-of-mouth as evidence of the film’s success.

Disney and Pixar’s “Hoppers” earned $18 million at the box office this weekend, landing it in second place. Since its release earlier this month, the animated film has made a total of $120.4 million in the U.S. and Canada.

The Indian action movie “Dhurandhar The Revenge” earned $10 million, landing it in third place. “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” a horror film from Searchlight Pictures (owned by Disney), and the Universal Pictures romance “Reminders of Him” completed the top five highest-grossing films.
