Amazon MGM Studios is joining the Motion Picture Assn.

As a long-time movie enthusiast who’s witnessed the evolution of Hollywood from the golden age to the digital era, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation about Amazon MGM Studios joining the Motion Picture Assn. (MPA). This move signals a new chapter in storytelling, as tech giants like Amazon and Netflix are now officially part of the Hollywood family.

Amazon’s MGM Studios is set to become a part of the Motion Picture Association, the influential advocacy group representing Hollywood’s prominent film studios, as per an announcement made on Thursday.

On October 1st, the tech and retail behemoth based in Seattle, known for its content distribution through Amazon MGM (theatrical) and Prime Video (streaming), will formally join the Motion Picture Association (MPA) as its seventh member. Amazon has previously supported the MPA’s anti-piracy initiatives, serving as a board member of the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment.

Amazon, like Netflix before it, has become the second technology firm to secure Membership of the Motion Picture Association (MPA). This move suggests that Hollywood is continuing its endeavor to adapt to innovative methods for engaging audiences, primarily through streaming platforms.

In a shift from its past stance, favoring conventional film studios that produce movies for cinema screenings, the MPA caused quite a stir in 2019 by welcoming Netflix into its group.

Besides Netflix, this entity also represents content from Disney, Paramount, Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros. Discovery.

In simple terms, “Charles Rivkin, head of the MPA, stated that by bringing Amazon Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios into our organization, we’ll expand our collective efforts to make policies and protect content on a global scale for some of the most innovative and creative businesses within our industry.

“MPA studios fuel local economies, drive job creation, enrich cultures, and bolster communities everywhere they work. With Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios among our roster of extraordinary members, the MPA will have an even larger voice for the world’s greatest storytellers.”

Amazon, having made a splash in cinema in 2015 with Spike Lee’s “Chi-Raq,” is recognized for distributing films like “Manchester by the Sea,” “The Challenger,” “American Fiction,” “Saltburn,” and “One Night in Miami…

In 2022, the company solidified its position within the film and television industry by acquiring the long-standing movie and TV studio MGM, which had been associated with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) since 1928 until 2005.

In a statement, Mike Hopkins, who heads up Prime Video and Amazon Motion Picture & Television Group, expressed that Amazon’s goal is to captivate audiences globally with engaging movies and series. To achieve this, he emphasized the need to nurture storytellers and maintain a thriving entertainment industry, benefiting both studios and creative collaborators.
