As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent in the vibrant world of Yakuza, I can hardly contain my excitement for Amazon’s upcoming TV series adaptation! Having lived through Kiryu’s trials and tribulations across multiple iterations, it feels like a dream come true to finally witness the gritty underworld of Kamurocho unfold on the small screen.
Amazon unveiled a fresh teaser for their forthcoming television production titled “Like a Dragon: Yakuza“, which is inspired by their popular video game series.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reminisce about my favorite duo, Kiryu and Majima, and the iconic Millennium Tower – a beacon of Kamurocho that never fails to capture my heart.
The official description reads:
This intense Japanese drama delves deep into the shadowy world of the yakuza, examining the timeless concept of family beyond traditional bloodlines. It showcases connections between yakuza leaders and their followers, guardians and orphans, and teachers and pupils.
The connections here show a mix of profound love and fierce disagreements, with each emotion skillfully woven together. This narrative takes place in the imaginary city called Kamurocho, spanning over two overlapping periods – 1995 and 2005.
In 1995, yearning for freedom from their constraining existences, Kiryu, accompanied by Nishiki, Yumi, and Miho, devise a robbery at a neighborhood arcade. Unfortunately, this arcade is governed by the Dojima Family, a formidable yakuza group that commands Kamurocho. They plunge into the underworld of 1995 Kamurocho, controlled by the yakuza, in pursuit of their plan.
2005 finds Kiryu exiting prison. Detective Date informs him that his friends are in peril, causing him to head back to Kamurocho with the aim of shielding them. Unfortunately, their bond has weakened due to escalating conflicts between the Tojo Clan and the Omi Alliance.
Well, it’s like stepping back into my favorite game from way back, but now with a fresh twist. The series based on this classic title drops on Amazon Prime Video starting October 24th, and I can hardly wait!
