On Monday, Amazon announced that they will be eliminating 110 positions within their audio division, Wondery, as part of an organizational restructure.
The reductions signal a trend in the industry towards creating more podcasts with video content, which is increasingly preferred by listeners who follow their favorite personalities across platforms like YouTube and Spotify.
These job cuts signal a recent tightening of the thriving podcast sector, as illustrated by the latest developments. For instance, in June, Spotify reduced its workforce in the podcast department by 5%, while Audacy, based in Philadelphia, closed down Pineapple Street Studios, which is located in New York.
With the surge in popularity of video podcasts, it’s become clear that shows with creators leading and incorporating videos have unique audience requirements, and these necessitate separate approaches for discovery, expansion, and monetization compared to audio-focused storytelling series,” Steve Boom, Vice President of Audio at Twitch and Amazon Games, explained in a memo to his team.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I’m excited to share the news that Amazon is making some changes to enhance their audio content offerings. Specifically, they are merging Wondery’s storytelling podcast studio with Audible, their division dedicated to audiobooks and podcasts. This means that the talented team behind Wondery’s creator-led podcast studio will now be part of a new entity called Creator Services, joining forces with Amazon’s Talent Services Group. This union promises an even richer and more engaging audio experience for us listeners!

Commencing from January in various markets, including the U.S., Spotify Premium subscribers will gain access to an ad-free video experience. Meanwhile, content creators will have the opportunity to generate income from these videos.
In the year 2020, Amazon purchased Wondery, a well-known company based in Culver City, without disclosing the exact amount spent. This company is renowned for creating podcast series such as “Dr. Death,” “American Scandal,” and “The Shrink Next Door.
According to Amazon, these changes are intended to enhance their ability to assist creators in various platforms to earn revenue from their content. Simultaneously, the procedure for advertisers will be streamlined. Furthermore, the company aims to make this content easily reachable for audiences, no matter where they choose to consume it.
The CEO of Wondery, Jen Sargent, is departing the company to explore different ventures, according to information from Amazon.
Ray Wang, a principal analyst at Constellation Research, stated that the restructuring aims to expand the company’s advertising sector.
“This makes a lot of sense given how advertisers view both formats,” Wang said.
