Amazon Cans ‘On Call’ After One Season—But Could the Police Drama Make a Surprise Comeback?
As a movie reviewer, I’m sad to report that the cancellation train seems to be gaining momentum these days. Following CBS’s dramatic reshuffling of its crime series lineup, NBC’s sweeping cuts, and now Amazon joining the fray, it appears they’re all in a ‘chopping’ mood. Unfortunately, this means that the half-hour action crime drama will not be renewed for another season. This decision is surprising given its pedigree, having been produced by Dick Wolf‘s Wolf Entertainment, and receiving a positive response from viewers. It’s disappointing to see yet another promising series join the ranks of one-season wonders.
As a passionate cinephile, I was taken aback when they decided against renewing “On Call” for another season. Given the mixed reviews from critics and yet an astounding 92% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes, it came as a shock to many. However, it appears that this may not be the end of the story. According to Deadline, the creative minds behind the show are already hunting for a new broadcasting platform. Streamers like Peacock are among those being wooed, which seems fitting considering Universal Television has a hand in the series.
The series “On Call” premiered on Prime Video in January, with all eight episodes becoming available at once and swiftly climbing to the top of the streaming platform’s chart. The enthusiastic response from viewers, coupled with the surge of interest, suggested that the show might be renewed for additional seasons. Interestingly, it was said that Amazon even contacted the producers of the show about producing two more seasons. However, due to the streamer aiming to reduce production costs from their relatively low starting point, it appears that Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television were unwilling to comply with this request, ultimately leading to the cancellation of the series.
‘On Call’ Could Return to Service on Another Streamer
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I must admit that I’m left scratching my head over Amazon deciding not to renew “On Call” for more seasons on Prime Video. Given the undeniable potential and audience engagement it generated, one would think they could afford a couple more installments. However, rumors suggest that the series was operating at a loss, which raises questions about their cost-cutting measures, especially considering their apparent faith in the show’s future. It’s fascinating to ponder how they determine such losses within streaming content—a question that seems to be on everyone’s mind. Despite its current status, there remains an oddly optimistic aura surrounding “On Call,” hinting at the possibility of its resurrection in the future.
Originally developed by Tim Walsh and Elliot Wolf, the series titled “On Call” focuses on patrol officers portrayed by Troian Bellisario and Brandon Larracuente as they serve a specific Los Angeles district. The narrative style of each episode mimics real-time, incorporating impactful body-camera sequences for dramatic impact. Like Wolf’s renowned “One Chicago” franchise, it also explores compelling character stories.
As a supporter, I’m eagerly awaiting news about the future of our beloved show, “On Call.” It seems that its continuation depends on locating a platform ready to meet the market price for the series. Time will tell if it’s headed for permanent retirement or just taking a break. In the meantime, you can catch up with season 1 on Amazon Prime Video.
