Almost everyone will die in 'House of the Dragon.' Here's who didn't survive Season 2

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for epic sagas and a soft spot for dragons, I must admit that “House of the Dragon” has been a captivating journey thus far. The Targaryen war of succession, while tragic, is as enthralling as it is heart-wrenching.

The Dance of the Dragons has been unfolding gradually, yet the struggle for Targaryen succession continues to smolder with intensity.

In the finale of “House of the Dragon” Season 2, which aired on Sunday, there was little violence depicted, but the stage has been set for conflict. Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen has strengthened her forces by recruiting additional soldiers from loyal houses and adding new dragon riders to her dragon stable. On the other hand, King Aegon II, who sustained severe burns and a crippled leg during the Battle of Rook’s Rest (Episode 4: “The Red Dragon and the Gold”), has fled King’s Landing in an attempt to hide until his power-hungry and treacherous brother Prince Aemond finishes destroying everything in his path.

The tragic event where Aemond unintentionally killed his nephew Prince Lucerys in the finale of the first HBO series season set off an inevitable Targaryen civil war. Since then, many lives have been lost. As Princess Rhaenys Targaryen warned at the start of these events, “there is no war more brutal than a war between dragons.”

Here are all the major deaths from “House of the Dragon” Season 2.

Jaehaerys Targaryen

In a plot of vengeance for the demise of her son, Lucerys, Rhaenyra hired an assassin who ended up taking the life of young Jaehaerys, Aegon II’s son. Tragically, Helaena, Jaehaerys’ mother, was compelled to identify him before the killer struck.

Blood and Cheese

Blood, who was employed by Daemon to kill Aemond, ended up being slain by Aegon II because he killed Jaehaerys instead. After Blood admitted that another rat-catcher helped him with the task, all the rat-catchers, including Cheese, were executed for their involvement.

Erryk and Arryk Cargyll

Two loyal knights pledged fealty to rival Targaryens: Arryk was tasked with secretly invading Dragonstone disguised as his brother, with the intention of eliminating Rhaenyra. However, Erryk thwarted him by engaging in a deadly battle and ultimately taking his own life out of sorrow.

Gunthor Darklyn

The lord of House Darklyn, who had sworn fealty to Rhaenyra, refused to bend the knee to Aegon II so he was beheaded by Criston Cole (after insulting him).

Rhaenys Targaryen

In a turn of events that history might have favored, the Queen Who Never Ascended (yet deservedly so), Rhaenys, soared on her dragon Meleys into combat against Criston Cole’s troops at Rook’s Rest. Tragically, she plummeted to her demise when Meleys was fatally injured during a fierce skirmish with Aemond and his colossal dragon Vhagar in that very battle.

Steffon Darklyn

As a cinephile penning my thoughts on the latest episode, let me share an intriguing development: A member of Rhaenyra’s personal guard, claiming distant Targaryen lineage, boldly sought to bond with Seasmoke, her dragon. Unfortunately, in a heart-wrenching twist, he met his end amidst the fiery breath of the beast he aimed to tame.

Grover Tully

The unseen, ailing Lord of Riverrun, merely referred to, breathes his last due to illness, paving the way for his grandson, Oscar, to assume the position.

Willem Blackwood

As a film enthusiast immersed in the world of Westeros, I’d rephrase it this way: In the Riverlands, I was a noble lord who aided Daemon in his mission to win over the loyalty of the Riverlords (and gather an army). Unfortunately, my allegiance with Daemon led to my downfall, as he was compelled to demonstrate his disapproval of the atrocities committed by Blackwood under his name, resulting in my execution.

Other deaths

Other families from House Blackwood and House Bracken, longtime adversaries in the Riverlands who had taken sides with different Targaryen factions, continued to engage in conflict and suffer losses.

A large number of Targaryen offspring from humble origins were tragically consumed or incinerated by Vermithor during Rhaenyra’s search for potential dragon riders among those families not traditionally acknowledged within her own lineage.
