All the toxic feuds between Disney child stars as Hilary Duff finally addresses her decades-long rift with ‘nemesis’ Lindsay Lohan

It’s natural to think child stars would form a close bond, since they share the unique experience of becoming famous and wealthy so young.

Despite the friendly appearances on screen, many people involved with the Disney Channel experienced intense conflicts and feuds with their co-stars.

Hilary Duff recently spoke about her long-standing feud with Lindsay Lohan, confirming they’ve resolved their differences. The conflict was a major topic of discussion in the early 2000s.

However, Miley Cyrus and Emily Osment, along with Bella Thorne and Zendaya, weren’t the only Disney Channel stars to experience public disagreements. Several other co-stars also had falling-outs that became known to the public.

The Daily Mail is now sharing stories of former Disney stars whose personal lives were as eventful as their careers.

Lindsay Lohan vs Hilary Duff

For over two decades, the famous rivalry between Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan in the early 2000s has remained a well-known story in pop culture.

The feud started around 2002, stemming from both celebrities dating Aaron Carter before his passing.

Hilary and Aaron first met in 2001 on the set of Lizzie McGuire when they were both 13 years old, and they immediately started dating for two years.

However, he then started getting to know her best friend at the time, Lindsay.

In 2005, Aaron admitted he had cheated on Hilary with ‘her best friend’.

During an interview with Donny Deutsch, he admitted to having an affair with Hilary’s best friend.

He admitted there was no reason to be happy about the situation, explaining that he had deeply hurt her and that he regretted it.

During a now-removed interview on The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch, he revealed that he began dating Hilary on his thirteenth birthday.

I dated her for about a year and a half, but I started to lose interest. That’s when I began seeing Lindsay.

Lindsay and Aaron only dated for a few months before calling it quits in 2003.

Although Lindsay and Hilary had broken up, their conflict was really just starting.

As a lifestyle observer, I noticed something interesting happening with the Disney stars recently. They started attending each other’s movie premieres, but it wasn’t exactly a show of support – it felt more like a subtle competition, a quiet ‘one-upmanship’ played out on the red carpet. People are now calling it a ‘silent red carpet war,’ and honestly, that pretty much sums it up!

In 2004, Lindsay Lohan was featured in a Saturday Night Live sketch where Rachel Dratch impersonated her character, Duff, as if she were in the show Lizzie McGuire.

Hilary said she didn’t feel honored by the situation. She explained she wasn’t going to respond negatively, especially since she felt the other person frequently spoke poorly about her.

‘I just knew that it was going to happen.’

According to BuzzFeed, Lindsay reportedly didn’t stop there – she supposedly called Hilary’s “A Cinderella Story” co-star, Chad Michael Murray, and spread false rumors about her.

Hilary told Allure in 2008: ‘I’ve never stolen anyone’s boyfriend! I don’t know how you do that!’

After years of disagreement, Hilary publicly spoke about her long-running conflict with someone, appearing on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast to do so.

Hilary discussed crashing the premiere of a movie starring Lindsay Lohan, whom she’s had a long-standing rivalry with.

On the podcast, Alex playfully asked Hilary if she had deliberately caused a scene at the premiere of ‘Freaky Friday,’ referencing the popular story surrounding the event.

Hilary then replied, ‘I think absolutely. Yes. Yeah, I was a teenager.’

“Wait, were you actually surprised to see Lindsay Lohan at the Cheaper by the Dozen premiere?” Alex asked.

Hilary admitted that Lindsay was a long-standing rival, explaining it was a childhood feud – a classic rivalry that lasted for years.

She then added: ‘I’m sure my publicist will be like, “What the f**k are you doing?”

‘But now it’s so many years later, like who cares? It does not matter.

I ran into Lindsay at a club one time, and she asked if we were okay. I told her we were.

‘She was like, “Let’s take a shot.” I was like, “Okay,” but also Chad Michael Murray invited me.’

I wasn’t looking for trouble, but he asked me to join him, and I reluctantly agreed. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to go along.

‘I mean, what was I like sixteen? No, I think I was younger than that. Fifteen?’

Selena Gomez vs Demi Lovato

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato both got their start in 2002 on the children’s show Barney & Friends, where they played Angela and Gianna. Interestingly, both actresses later dated members of the Jonas Brothers.

They also appeared together in the 2009 Disney Channel comedy, Princess Protection Program, directed by Allison Liddi-Brown.

At the time, they appeared inseparable, going to red carpets together and posting vlogs to YouTube.

In their first video together, Demi introduced Selena as ‘my best friend in the world.’ Selena then shared that Demi has been her best friend since they were seven years old.

In 2010, while signing autographs, Demi Lovato seemed to subtly criticize Selena Gomez’s relationship with Taylor Swift.

Demi was asked how Selena was, and she responded: ‘Ask Taylor!’

Both Taylor Swift and Sophie Turner have dated Joe Jonas, and Selena Gomez previously dated his brother, Nick Jonas.

Demi shared an update about her friendship with Selena in an interview with Girls Life magazine that year.

She acknowledged they were both busy and expressed her good wishes. She emphasized that real friends protect you from unkindness from others, including family, and that trust is essential for any friendship.

Late that year, Demi checked into rehab for an eating disorder.

In a 2014 interview, she revealed that Selena was one of the first people to reach out to her.

In an interview with Seventeen, Selena expressed regret about how she handled the situation.

‘I’ve known her since we were 7, and we did fall apart for a while,’ she said.

Back in 2013, Demi unfollowed Selena on X, which was then Twitter. She later explained on Watch What Happens Live that people simply drift apart as they change and grow.

They seemed to reconcile in 2015, sharing a selfie on Instagram and publicly supporting each other’s work.

As a lifestyle observer, I remember early 2018 when Selena made a pretty significant move on Instagram. She went through her followers and unfollowed a large number of accounts – over 200, actually! It was definitely noticed, especially because her longtime friend, Demi, was among those she unfollowed at the time.

Later that year, Demi returned the action by unfollowing Selena.

Okay, so I heard from someone who’s in the know that she’s really prioritizing herself right now, which is amazing! Apparently, she just wants to avoid any drama or complicated relationships for a while. Honestly, good for her! She deserves to focus on her own happiness, and I totally get needing to step away from anything stressful. I’m still hoping for a happy ending, but I respect her needing this time!

She needs to be around people who encourage her and avoid those who bring her down.

In April 2020, Demi shared that she and Selena are no longer close friends.

She explained to Harper’s Bazaar that when you share your life with someone for a long time, there will always be affection. However, she clarified that she and this person are not currently friends, which made the situation difficult.

‘I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best.’

Last year, Demi said she ‘couldn’t be happier’ for Selena ahead of her wedding to Benny Blanco.

Demi recently shared on Watch What Happens Live that she’s thrilled for the newly engaged woman and wishes her all the best.

Sabrina Carpenter vs Olivia Rodrigo

Back in 2020, rumors circulated that Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo were both involved with Joshua Bassett, creating a complicated romantic situation.

Many people believe Olivia’s hit song “Driver’s License,” which made her famous in January 2021, was written about Joshua after their split.

They were said to have been dating while filming the first two seasons of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which first came out on Disney+ in 2019.

People online started targeting Joshua after some fans of Olivia believed the song was about her, and they defended her fiercely.

Many listeners believed Sabrina was the woman Olivia Rodrigo sang about in her song, specifically the ‘blonde girl’ who caused her to question her relationship.

The lyrics also mention the blonde woman is ‘much older than me,’ and many fans believed this was a reference to the three-year age gap between Olivia and Sabrina.

Sabrina, like many stars, began her career on Disney Channel. She was rumored to be dating Joshua around mid-2020, but they had split up by 2021.

Soon after releasing “Driver’s License,” Sabrina put out another song, “Skin,” which many people interpreted as a response to the first.

The song appears to be directed at someone named Olivia, and the lyrics suggest a wistful thought: ‘Perhaps we could have been friends if our paths had crossed in a different time or place. Maybe we could have acted like everything was okay, and ignored the weight of what we’ve written.’

‘Maybe you didn’t mean it; Maybe blonde was the only rhyme; The only rhyme.’

Joshua also released his own song, called “Lie Lie Lie,” which many believe relates to the ongoing situation.

‘So they told me all the things that you said; Running all over my name, oh-oh-oh,’ he sang.

‘And you’re acting, oh, so innocent; Like I’m the only one to blame.’

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following the buzz around Olivia and Joshua, and honestly, they’ve always kept things very private. They’ve never actually confirmed or denied anything about whether they were ever together, or what led to any potential split. It’s all been speculation, and they’ve smartly maintained that privacy throughout.

Even though Olivia and Joshua were once rumored to have had issues, they proved they were on good terms when they happily reunited at the premiere of High School Musical season three in 2022.

In interviews, Olivia has also stressed that there is no bad blood between her and Sabrina.

She explained to Radio.com in 2021 that she doesn’t really know the person at all, only having briefly met them once or twice without ever truly speaking.

I personally need a personal connection to someone to write a truly heartfelt or meaningful song. However, I believe all artists should have the freedom to write about any subject they choose.

She acknowledged people are curious about who the song is about, but emphasized that the person’s identity isn’t the most important thing to focus on.

She told Variety she doesn’t believe in being angry at other women over romantic interests, calling the idea ‘so stupid’ and expressing frustration with the way that idea had been spread.

You know, I was recently asked about this whole ‘era’ thing, and honestly, it’s not something that crosses my mind. I really don’t spend any time thinking about it, ever. I’m much more focused on the present and what’s next!

Responding to the line about a ‘blonde girl,’ she jokingly explained that she’d tried having brown hair before, but it didn’t suit her, so she’s sticking with blonde.

Bella Thorne vs Zendaya

From 2010 to 2013, Bella Thorne and Zendaya starred as best friends in the Disney Channel series, Shake It Up!

But behind the scenes, their on-screen friendship couldn’t have been further from the truth.

In 2021, Bella explained that she hesitated to become friends with her co-star during the first season of the show because they were constantly being compared to each other.

She explained to Us Weekly that, as they discussed in earlier interviews, they weren’t friends at the start of the first season. It took the following two seasons for them to become close.

It was difficult adjusting from a time when I didn’t have any rivals to suddenly being in a situation where everyone seemed to be competing against me.

‘That fed into our heads. It made us not [be] friends in that first season.’

The Disney Channel show Shake It Up featured Bella Thorne and Zendaya as best friends CeCe Jones and Rocky Blue. They got their dream jobs as dancers on a popular TV show.

Bella shared that she and Zendaya became close friends after having an honest conversation while filming, and they’ve remained friends even after the show finished.

The celebrity confessed she’s still puzzled by the constant comparisons between herself and Zendaya, but she’s gotten better at ignoring the negativity and focusing on what matters.

Zendaya has said that she and Tom Holland are conscious of the public’s interest in their relationship, especially regarding how people view their friendship.

We’ll share things with each other on social media, but we’re aware everyone sees that. If she really wants to talk, she’ll just call or text me directly.

Miley Cyrus vs Emily Osment

Miley Cyrus and Emily Osment played best friends throughout the entirety of Hannah Montana.

But in reality, the pair didn’t actually get along.

In her 2009 memoir, Miley wrote that she attempted to become friends with her close co-star in real life, but their efforts always resulted in disagreements.

She wrote: ‘The show felt real to me, and I wanted my relationship with Lilly to feel real, too.

‘I knew it didn’t have to – show business is show business – but I was disappointed.

I used to think we’d never become friends. We just couldn’t seem to connect.

In 2020, they appeared to have resolved their differences when they came together for a virtual reunion on Miley’s Instagram.

Miley described Emily as a strong and amazing friend, and the two of them happily shared old pictures and talked about how much they both love animals.
