All the things that are FAKE about The Holiday! After Jude Law ‘broke the internet’ by teasing a possible sequel – a look at the glaring plot holes, and impractical timelines that you won’t be able to unsee
As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of cinema, I must say that “The Holiday” is one of those feel-good films that always leaves me with a warm and fuzzy feeling. However, upon closer inspection, it seems that this seemingly perfect movie harbors some not-so-perfect plot holes.
With an abundance of romantic moments, breathtaking landscapes, and touching narratives, The Holiday stands out as a timeless Christmas favorite that appeals to people of all ages.
Despite being 18 years old since its initial release in 2006, the much-loved British romantic comedy remains a staple viewing choice among Brits during the holiday season. However, upon closer inspection, things aren’t quite as they appear.
In this rephrased version, the story revolves around Amanda, who’s had bad luck with romance, planning a home exchange and deciding to celebrate the holidays at a charming British countryside cottage owned by journalist Iris.
Instead of staying in the picturesque home in Surrey, Iris moves into Amanda’s grand Hollywood mansion. Both women find themselves smitten by a thrilling new romance as they cross paths with Graham and Miles.
As we approach the joyous holiday season, I can’t help but share an exciting tidbit that has me buzzing! The charismatic actor Jude Law has sent social media into a frenzy with a tantalizing hint about a potential sequel. This came after he recreated a cherished scene from one of our favorite films, leaving fans eagerly speculating what could be next.
Recently, actor Jude, aged 51, had a reunion with director Nancy Meyers over lunch, marking the occasion of Jude receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame that they celebrated together.
However, when she brought up the frequent queries regarding the actor’s plans for a sequel, Jude responded with a sigh and declared, “Just a moment,” followed by him mimicking the character Mr. Napkin Head from the movie by placing his napkin and glasses on his head.
Following Nancy posting the video online, spectators became quite enthusiastic, asserting that the duo had “shattered the web” with their sketch, leading some to speculate whether a follow-up might be in the works.
The revelation followed shortly after Jude shared more behind-the-scenes details of the movie, shattering some fans’ illusion when he disclosed that the cottage belonging to Iris, portrayed by Kate Winslet in the Christmas classic, is actually fictional on BBC Radio 2.
After the unexpected confession, TopMob is gathering points about The Holiday that don’t align with reality.
Iris worked for a newspaper and could afford THAT cottage
For many years, enthusiasts of the film have repeatedly found it amusing to speculate that, given her income as a journalist, Iris could not realistically have owned her charming country cottage.
Despite it not being real, the cosy cottage that inspired it sold for a whopping £675,000.
Apart from the daily long drive into Central London from Surrey, it seems there isn’t a great deal of accessible public transportation where she resides.
The enchanting Rosehill Cottage gained quite a reputation following the movie’s premiere, as viewers dubbed it an idyllic, quintessential English holiday home straight out of a fairytale.
Inside, there was a roll-top bathtub and a charmingly worn kitchen, while the outside sported a light coating of snow.
One seconds-long scene took a whole week to shoot
Towards the movie’s close, Amanda suddenly halted the vehicle en route to the airport, choosing instead to return to Los Angeles.
She is adamant that the driver stops and allows her to disembark so she can run several miles back to Graham at the cottage, even though she’s wearing high heels.

Despite the brief duration of the scene on-screen, Cameron Diaz disclosed that it required an entire week and plenty of discomfort to film it successfully.
The actress told Vulture: ‘Oh, girl. I was running, like, seven miles a day in heels. That whole scene took a week to shoot. That wasn’t even in the script.
‘They only used two shots, but we shot like ten shots of me running across ten different fields.
Additionally, I’ve got on a Valentino cashmere and wool trench coat, paired with a cashmere turtleneck sweater, denim pants, and high-heeled boots.
The picturesque cottage was fake
Actor Jude Law, known for his role as widowed character Graham who develops affection for Amanda in the film, has just disclosed an unexpected fact from the set.
The actor, 51, appeared on BBC Radio 2 with host Zoe Ball and comedian Kerry Godliman on Friday.
Regarding the charming cottage where Amanda spends her vacations, Kerry inquired, “Is it possible to rent that cottage through Airbnb?” To which Zoe responded affirmatively, “I believe it is.” However, Jude disclosed the actual situation.
As it turns out, the picturesque cottage the director had been searching for couldn’t be found in that region. Being meticulous, she explored the entire area but failed to locate the quaint, storybook-like cottage she had intended to use in her film production. This information was recently disclosed.
She contracted a field, sketched out its design, and had someone construct it. However, there’s an interesting twist: when you observe it, you’ll find…
In other words, during the winter, we filmed our scenes here, while whenever I walked through that particular door, we would pause production to later film those indoor shots in Los Angeles approximately three months after.
Astounded, Zoe exclaimed, “We’ve had enough. We just can’t take any more of this,” and Kerry echoed, “That’s truly disheartening.
Looking sheepish, Jude replied: ‘Just burst the bubble, sorry.’
Although Rosehill Cottage is fictional, the cast filmed scenes in the Surrey villages of Shere and Godalming.
In 2021, the charming Honeysuckle Cottage in Holmbury St Mary was listed for sale and later transformed into an Airbnb. This cottage served as the source of inspiration for the design team who worked on it.
After the movie’s release, Rosehill Cottage gained quite a reputation, being often referred to as an idyllic English dream house for the holidays by its enthusiastic fans.
The home swap was organised within 24 hours
In the storyline of the movie, the quick house exchange between Iris and Amanda, crucial to its plot, seemed to be the most implausible element.
As a lifestyle expert, let me share some insights about two dynamic individuals I’ve come across. I, myself, work in journalism at The Telegraph, much like Iris. On the other hand, Amanda has an intriguing role as a movie trailer editor. Together, they juggle their full-time careers with grace and dedication.
Despite this, the characters managed to organise their annual leave, not to mention book flights, within 24 hours.
In an unprecedented display of spontaneity, everything fell swiftly into place just hours after they made up their minds, encountering no apparent difficulties whatsoever.
They too engaged in a daring move, as they neglected to investigate the backgrounds of those they welcomed into their residence, not bothering to do even a brief online search.
From the excited response Iris displayed upon entering Amanda’s mansion, it seemed as though she hadn’t caught a glimpse of the property beforehand, not in photographs or otherwise.
The snow was mostly fake
During our chat, I admitted that the picturesque layer of ‘snow’ adorning the slopes around my quaint cabin, was merely an illusion.
She shared with the press: “We spread an entirely biodegradable, artificial snow across the entire hillside, and it was simply amazing! You wouldn’t expect snow in England, as it typically rains. However, we managed to create little patches of it.
Although Cameron maintained that England doesn’t have snow, reports suggest that the crew encountered three light snow showers during production, making some scenes authentic and genuine.
To my surprise, I hadn’t anticipated needing a snow machine, but luckily someone else had already arranged for its hire and brought it along, as they didn’t expect we’d really need it.
The timeline is all over the place
At the start of The Holiday, Iris’ supervisor at The Telegraph informs her that they plan to manage with fewer employees than usual this week.
It was determined by Cosmopolitan that, given the typical schedule of a newspaper office, this would fall on Friday, December 22nd (closest to Christmas).
In other words, they’ll begin their home swap vacation a day after, on December 23rd.
Keeping this timeline in consideration, it implies that the significant scenes in the movie, like Amanda having a date with Graham, transpire either on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, although the film does not explicitly state these specific dates.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that Graham has two kids and their current locations, while he is away with Amanda.
Graham’s young daughters both have cell phones in 2006
Many viewers are finding themselves perplexed over the scene where Graham’s on-screen daughters, Sophie and Olivia, who are five and seven years old respectively, appear to be using cell phones in the movie.
In contrast to today, where many youngsters do possess a mobile phone, it was rather unusual back in 2006 for kids under ten years old to own one.
From my perspective as a lifestyle advisor, I often find myself reflecting on situations similar to one in a film where a character like Amanda becomes intrigued due to repeated mysterious phone calls received by someone such as Graham. It turns out these calls were actually from his long-lost daughters.
Yet, upon their encounter, the phones that were meant to be with them appear to be missing as well.
Amanda drinks half a bottle of wine then drives back to the cottage
After grappling with my recent reduction in living space and the turbulence in my romantic affairs, I ventured out on the wintry roads of Surrey, heading towards our nearby village.
On her journey to the local stores, she’s noticed having difficulty figuring out how to drive with traffic on the opposite side and navigating roads that are on the opposite side as well.
In one scene she even nearly causes a crash as she battled with the narrow country roads.
However, while Amanda purchases more than £100 worth of food and alcohol at a supermarket, she’s observed consuming half a bottle of red wine as she navigates through the aisles.
Regardless of whether the shopkeepers allowed Amanda to return to her car without contacting the authorities, the odds of her reaching her destination without an accident appear remarkably slim.
