All the answers to Umbrella Academy’s series finale questions

As a die-hard fan of The Umbrella Academy, I must say that the final scene of season 3 left me utterly bewildered yet incredibly satisfied. I was left scratching my head trying to identify all the characters in their casual attire, but once I recognized them, it was a delightful surprise!

Netflix’s show, titled “The Umbrella Academy“, concluded in its fourth season, wrapping up things quite dramatically to say the least. Just like many other superheroes nowadays, these siblings are confronting the impending apocalypse, and they are no exception.

[Ed. note: As you might expect from a post answering questions about the end of Umbrella Academy season 4, we are about to discuss the end of Umbrella Academy season 4. Spoilers ahead.]

As a gamer, let me rephrase that: Typically, superheroes don’t meet their end while saving the multiverse. It’s rare for an entire team to be wiped out by some bizarre cosmic beast devouring the world. So, what transpired at the end of the world in The Umbrella Academy? Here are the mysteries we were left pondering, and our best shots at solving them.

What was up with Abigail?

In the last episode, Abigail (who is Reginald’s wife in multiple realities) confides in Reginald that it was her who set off the catastrophic event surrounding them. As she explains, the chain reaction caused by Ben and Jennifer’s particles colliding resembles an occurrence on their home planet (presumably), which led to Abigail’s demise and ultimately the destruction of their world.

“She laments, her voice heavy with sadness, ‘My punishment for crafting such a lethal thing was death.’ She questions, ‘Was the cleansing of the world not sufficient torment? Why did you have to bring destruction upon this one too?'”

It seems that Abigail’s confession on the bench is an account of a complex plan or scheme: Abigail explains that Reginald’s actions had “implications far beyond what he ever thought possible,” and she believed it was her “responsibility to rectify the situation.”

Given the significant role the show’s timelines and Time Commission played in maintaining order, there’s a strong possibility that Abigail orchestrated the entire series as its mastermind. This interpretation suggests that she intentionally triggered various apocalypses to gather necessary components for ending the world, thereby preventing Reginald from repeatedly resurrecting her and the universe. It could also clarify why Reginald felt compelled to safeguard Abigail’s body on the moon. By Season 4, all the pieces finally fall into place.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but reflect on how this mirror serves as a profound representation of the lessons our young ones must embrace. This acceptance, when internalized by them, could potentially pave the way for a long-awaited global tranquility – leading us rightfully to…

So… what happened at the end of season 4 exactly?

As a scientist who has spent decades studying energy phenomena, I can confidently say that the situation involving Ben and Jennifer is quite extraordinary. From my perspective, their unique ability to trigger a chain reaction, which they call “The Cleanse,” is something I’ve never encountered in my life. It’s not just about their individual energy forms; it’s the interaction between them that creates this powerful effect. If they touch, as they have been warned, the consequences could be catastrophic for our world. It’s a delicate balance between understanding the science and respecting the potential danger. I can only imagine what they must feel knowing their touch could bring about such a significant event, whether they view it as a blessing or a curse. In any case, it’s crucial to tread carefully and approach this situation with caution.

After striving to prevent it, The Umbrella Academy encounters difficulties, but eventually, Five winds up at a café filled with multiple Fives from various timelines that have been attempting to halt the apocalypse. He learns that he and his siblings have made 145,412 attempts to save the world, causing a chaotic tangle of timelines where there should be just one. He then communicates this discovery back to his siblings with the conclusion: The Cleanse isn’t necessarily evil; they must embrace death in order to truly unite the timelines and eradicate apocalypses forever.

As a member of the Hargreeves clan, there’s always some friendly banter, but in the end, we all toe the line. This is the gig we chose: superheroes, saving the world one day at a time, even if it wasn’t exactly how we envisioned risking our lives. But with our loved ones safe from the looming Cronenbergian beast devouring reality and a serene future within reach, we stood united to make it happen.

What does Reginald being an alien have to do with that?

In essence, for “The Umbrella Academy” series, it’s only been hinted that his advanced technology skills originate from there. However, he being an extraterrestrial was a significant aspect in the comic books, a point that the Netflix adaptation has significantly deviated from already.

Who were those people at the end?

In the concluding moments of “The Umbrella Academy,” a tranquil day unfolds in a park, devoid of any misfortune. A nostalgic revisit to season one is hinted through the soft rendition of “I Think We’re Alone Now.” Initially, we witness Lila reunited with her family, including Diego’s children and Claire, all seemingly unscathed after their subway ordeal, enjoying a leisurely picnic together.

Initially, only some Umbrella Academy members are visible, but as the camera moves, additional figures come into view. Identifying these characters is tricky due to their casual attire, which contrasts with their usual distinctive costumes and appearances. However, fear not! We’ll help you recognize them.

In the spirit of the 1960s setting of season 2, the trio casually throwing a Frisbee are none other than the three veteran Swedish assassins from that very season. Quite remarkable, isn’t it, that they’re not only still alive but also playing Frisbee? Cheers to that!

The duo, made up of Agnes, a well-known donut vendor, and Hazel, an assassin who found love for Agnes during season 1, are pedaling their bikes together.

I’m one of the gamers diving into the world of The Umbrella Academy, and let me tell you about this fascinating character. She’s the mom of the Hargreeves siblings, and I’ve come to know her as Grace. Now, here’s where it gets interesting – she’s not your typical human mom. You see, she was originally a robot, modeled after a woman that Reggie dated back in the 60s. It’s tricky to tell if she’s a robot or the real woman who miraculously hasn’t aged since then, but one thing is certain – she’s got a mom’s touch as she gently pushes a stroller!

In the midst of her jog, there’s a woman bending – the one we know as The Handler! Without her wig and flashy attire, she seems quite different. Yet, she remains focused on her tasks. Some aspects indeed stay constant.

The person sketching is Gabriel Ba, the actual artist behind the Umbrella Academy comics (#meta).

Two colleagues, Dot and Herb, previously engaged in union activities at the Commission, are currently enjoying each other’s company while playing backgammon. They made headlines when they stood up to the new Handler upon her appointment to the Board of Directors. Instead of fretting over impending global catastrophes, these days they simply appreciate the sunshine and tranquility.

In the backdrop, there are other individuals who appear somewhat distant, making it challenging to identify them clearly. According to Showrunner Steve Blackman, several actors from previous seasons reappear in this concluding scene, with the exceptions being Mary J. Blige and John Magaro from season 1. Additionally, he hinted that Dolores the mannequin will make a surprise appearance, so keep an eye out for her!

… Wait, how do Diego and Lila’s and Claire’s children exist if their parents don’t exist?

I’m not entirely certain about that, but let’s go with the flow and assume they will have a positive outcome! <3
