Roronoa Zoro is the swordsman for the Straw Hat Pirates and a key member of Monkey D. Luffy’s crew, known for being incredibly strong. From a young age, Zoro has been determined to become the world’s greatest swordsman, and throughout the story, he’s used a variety of different swords to achieve that goal.
Roronoa Zoro has used a wide variety of swords, some for years and others only briefly. These weapons range from standard blades to those with curses or unique abilities. No matter what he wields – in his hands or even his mouth – Zoro can adjust his fighting style, making him a formidable opponent in any battle.
Zoro received his first sword, Wado Ichjimonji, from Koshiro, his early teacher and the father of his friend Kuina. The sword was meant for Kuina, but after she passed away, her father gave it to Zoro. He vowed to become the world’s greatest swordsman to remember her. Wado Ichjimonji was originally created by the famous blacksmith Shimotsuki Kozaburo, who was also Koshiro’s father.
Zoro continues to wield this sword, and he’ll probably keep it with him until he finally beats Dracule Mihawk. While he improved his ability to handle Wado Ichimonji’s power during his training, he’ll undoubtedly discover even more of what it can do as he gets ready for his biggest fight. As one of the twenty-one legendary swords, Wado Ichimonji is incredibly powerful and full of potential.
From a young age, Roronoa Zoro trained in a unique fighting style using three swords, and when we first meet him in *One Piece*, he’s already skilled with all three. However, Zoro doesn’t keep the same swords throughout his adventures. While he still has Wado Ichimonji, his other two original blades were broken during his fight with Dracule Mihawk. Mihawk clearly recognized that Zoro wasn’t strong enough to defeat him, even before their battle began.
We don’t know exactly how long Zoro wielded these two swords, but he’s had them since receiving them from Shimotsuki Kozaburo when he was a child. Considering Kozaburo’s skill with blades, they were likely decent quality. However, compared to the other swords Zoro uses in *One Piece*, these early katana aren’t particularly important.
When Roronoa Zoro lost his swords in a fight with Dracule Mihawk, he needed new ones fast to deal with the Arlong Pirates. During the battle at Arlong Park, Zoro briefly used swords borrowed from Johnny and Yosaku. These swords, known as the Nakiri blades, are similar to the traditional Japanese Nakiri knives, but slightly longer.
Although they weren’t famous or officially recognized, the swords Zoro borrowed from Johnny and Yosaku were clearly better than any he’d used before. He fought an octopus swordsman named Hachi using their blades. Zoro had trouble at first fighting with only one sword, but he ultimately won the battle with the borrowed swords before giving them back. Considering the entire story of *One Piece*, this brief use of Johnny and Yosaku’s swords isn’t particularly memorable.
When the world’s strongest swordsman, Dracule Mihawk, breaks Zoro’s swords, Zoro has to find replacements in Loguetown. He receives one of them, Yubashiri, as a gift from Ipponmastu, a local swordsmith who admires Zoro’s bravery. Yubashiri is a high-quality blade, considered one of the top 50 in its class, but it isn’t quite as strong as Zoro’s other sword, Wado Ichimonji.
Yubashiri was a well-behaved sword, a welcome change from some of the dangerous cursed blades Zoro had used before. Sadly, it was destroyed by Shu, a Marine Captain, during the battle to rescue Nico Robin at Enies Lobby. Shu had the power to rust anything, especially metal, thanks to his Devil Fruit ability. After the events at Thriller Bark, Zoro honored Yubashiri and found a new sword to take its place.

In the Loguetown Arc of *One Piece*, Zoro acquired another strong sword called Sandai Kitetsu. While powerful, it’s not as high-quality as Yubashiri, and Zoro found it more difficult to handle. What most people don’t know is that Sandai Kitetsu is a cursed blade, part of a family of cursed swords. Legend says wielding it brings terrible luck, but so far, Zoro hasn’t experienced any negative effects.
I watched as Zoro quickly proved he was worthy of Sandai Kitetsu, showing off his incredible skill with a sword and really wowing the shopkeeper. I later saw him put it to use during the attack on Onigashima, fighting both Big Mom and Kaido with it. While he couldn’t ultimately defeat them, even managing to briefly block an attack from *both* Emperors was a seriously impressive feat.
Shusui is considered one of the most powerful swords in the *One Piece* world. It was originally wielded by the famed samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma. After Ryuma died, Gecko Moria stole both the sword and Ryuma’s body, using them to make his army stronger. In a fight, Ryuma’s zombie easily defeated Brook, even though Brook had used almost all of his energy.
After battling Roronoa Zoro, the revived Ryuma was impressed by Zoro’s courage and gifted him the sword Shusui before finally being defeated. Shusui is a highly-regarded blade, one of the 21 Great Grade Meito, but it’s especially famous as a Black Blade. When Zoro arrived in Wano, he returned Shusui to Ryuma’s grave, as part of a deal to receive the sword Enma. Both Shusui and Enma are incredibly powerful swords wielded only by the most skilled swordsmen in the world of *One Piece*, highlighting just how strong Zoro is.
At the start of the Wano Arc, Roronoa Zoro quickly gets into a difficult situation when he’s falsely accused of murder. He’s ordered to commit seppuku – a ritual suicide – and given a small sword called a tanto. Zoro pretends to go through with the act, but then suddenly claims he senses blood. He then launches a powerful, dark-purple energy attack at the magistrate, killing him instantly, and causing the magistrate’s followers to attack Zoro.
Zoro then uses this sword to quickly defeat all his opponents, all while upbeat shamisen music plays. Despite its short length and difficult handling, Zoro demonstrates incredible skill with the blade. Though he was initially successful, thanks to coating it with Armament Haki, the sword wasn’t designed for actual combat. As a result, Zoro hasn’t used the awkward weapon since.
During the Wano Country arc, Zoro once again loses a sword when Gyukimaru steals his Shusui. While trying to retrieve it, he’s confronted by Kamazo the Manslayer, who is revealed to be Killer from the Kid Pirates. Kamazo is a powerful opponent, skilled in both Armament and Conqueror’s Haki, pushing Zoro to fight at his absolute limit.
While battling Kamazo, Zoro was momentarily thrown off by Gyukimaru, creating an opening for Killer to wound him with a scythe. Despite the injury, Zoro grabbed the scythe, held it in his mouth, and powerfully sliced through his opponent using a technique called Purgatory Onigiri – a visually stunning move. However, the attack cost Zoro a lot of blood, and he collapsed afterward, losing consciousness and the scythe itself.

Enma is a powerful sword originally created by Shimotsuki Kozaburo, and it was once wielded by the famous samurai, Kozuki Oden. After Oden’s death, his children, Hiyori and Momonosuke, inherited his weapons. Hiyori received Enma, named after the Japanese god of death, and later gave it to Roronoa Zoro. She did this in exchange for him leaving another sword, Shisui, behind in Wano Country, as Shisui was connected to the legendary swordsman Ryuma.
Enma is an incredibly powerful sword that only highly skilled swordsmen can handle. It’s dangerous because it drains the user’s Haki, potentially leading to death. To use it safely, a swordsman must carefully control their Haki and avoid overexertion. During his battle with Kaido, Zoro successfully combined his own Haki with Enma’s power, creating a devastating attack.
I’ve noticed that even Luffy will grab a blade when the situation calls for it, so it didn’t really surprise me to see Zoro using whatever swords he could find when needed. I remember when the Straw Hats landed on Drum Island, Zoro jumped into action when Wapol’s soldiers started attacking the locals. He didn’t even hesitate to borrow three cutlasses from them just to have something to fight with. Honestly, he made short work of those soldiers with those borrowed swords – they didn’t stand a chance. And it wasn’t a one-time thing; during the Ennies Lobby arc, he picked up a Marine cutlass after Shu destroyed his Yubashiri, showing he’s adaptable and always ready to fight, no matter the weapon.
A particularly memorable moment showcasing Zoro’s unusual fighting style happened during the Ennies Lobby arc. Usopp accidentally handcuffed himself to Zoro, which led to a ridiculous argument that quickly frightened him. Eventually, Zoro essentially forced Usopp to *become* his sword. Zoro then swung Usopp around while Usopp held Yubashiri, calling the move “Hana Arashi” (Nose Storm). While the scene was funny, fans are hoping to see Zoro wield more Black Blades before the end of *One Piece*.
