All About That Major Surprise Cameo in the Wicked Movie

As a longtime fan of musical theater and particularly of the enchanting world of “Wicked,” witnessing the cameo by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth in the film adaptation was nothing short of magical. Their roles as Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway were truly iconic, and their chemistry was a significant part of the show’s success.

People well-versed in “Wicked” are probably familiar with the significant impact that the extraordinary vocal talents and strong onstage connection of original Broadway performers Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth had in transforming the musical into a massive success right from its debut.

When Elphaala (Idina Menzel) and Glinda (Kristin Chenoweth) unexpectedly appear in the initial part of Jon M. Chu’s Wicked movie adaptation, currently playing in cinemas, it undeniably adds a thrilling element to the viewing experience. Although they were integral figures in the extensive promotional campaign for Wicked, their roles in the film were largely shrouded in secrecy—though rumors of a possible cameo swirled extensively as the premiere date drew near.

20 years since they first brought to life the legendary roles of Elphaba and Glinda when the Broadway musical “Wicked” debuted in October 2003, Tony Award winners Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are most recognized for these characters in the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of Oz. Nonetheless, both stars have given their backing to Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as they step into the roles of the magically gifted adversaries-turned-allies in the upcoming film adaptation.

In a conversation with Us Weekly, Chenoweth expressed that she and Idina Menzel share the same sentiment. They are thrilled for the young actresses and eagerly anticipate watching them bring their characters to life.

In the movie, the scene unfolds during their rendition of “One Short Day,” a song that accompanies Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda’s (Grande) tour through the Emerald City. While they enjoy a performance of the musical “Wizomania” – a creative adaptation from the play-within-a-play in the original stage show – Menzel and Chenoweth step into their roles as actors within “Wizomania.” They narrate the tale of how the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) arrived in Oz, sharing the history of the ancient book of spells called the Grimmerie. Eventually, they all join together to sing, adding a playful touch. At one point, Chenoweth playfully covers Grande’s mouth to prevent her from stealing too much attention.

People who have an eagle-eyed appreciation for musical theater icons might catch composer Stephen Schwartz, disguised as a palace guard, in the scene where Elphaba and Glinda arrive for their meeting with the Wizard, just as “One Short Day” draws to a close a few minutes later.
