Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Predator: Badlands
Predator: Badlands truly stands out as one of the most original installments in the Predator series. It’s unique because it focuses on a Predator as the main character, and it introduces a whole new set of alien creatures we haven’t seen before.
Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) is on a mission to prove his worth as a warrior to his clan and his demanding father. He travels to the dangerous planet Genna to hunt the Kalisk, a particularly deadly creature on a world already teeming with threats—and the ever-present Weyland-Yutani Corporation. To celebrate the show, we’ve put together a ranking of all the unique and dangerous creatures featured in Predator: Badlands, from our least to most favorite.
8. Explosive Grubs
Though they’re the smallest enemies in Badlands, Explosive Grubs can still cause significant damage. Dek uses these exploding creatures effectively in his attack on the Weyland-Yutani outpost. However, they aren’t the most visually striking of Genna’s creatures.
7. Rock Biters
At the start of Predator: Badlands, we see very large, worm-like creatures called Rock Biters clinging to the tops of rocks in the distance. They served as a dramatic introduction to the character Genna before the movie’s opening titles, but by the end of Predator: Badlands, Dek never actually encounters one of these creatures.
6. Vultures
In Predator: Badlands, dangerous creatures called Vultures soar through the air, hunting anything weakened by the fields of spiky plants below. These Vultures, with their reptilian heads and leathery wings, strongly resemble ancient pterodactyls.
5. Tree Vines
Genna’s Tree Vines were strange plants that seemed almost otherworldly. These living, predatory tendrils – possibly a single large creature with many branches – were the first danger Dek faced on Genna. He almost didn’t survive the encounter, as the vines methodically stripped him of his weapons, one by one.
Despite their strength, the Tree Vines were finally defeated by a Weyland-Yutani team equipped with flamethrowers.
4. Bone Bison
Bone Bison are massive, heavily armored creatures that the Kalisk hunt. They can move safely through Genna’s dangerous fields of razor-grass thanks to their unique build. Ultimately, Dek used the bison’s armor as a model to create his own protective gear by the end of the story.
One of the most exciting moments in Predator: Badlands featured a charging Bone Bison, which Dek impressively sliced in half with his sword.
3. Luna Bug
Despite the cute name “Luna Bugs” given by Thia, these creatures are genuinely terrifying in Predator: Badlands. While Dek and Thia are hunting a Bone Bison, they’re suddenly attacked from above by a Luna Bug – a large, monstrous creature with a huge, multi-fanged mouth and a body supported by three tentacle-like arms and a tail.
Luna Bugs are easily among Genna’s most distinctive and terrifying predators.
2. Kalisk
It’s not surprising that the Kalisk is a powerful creature, as it’s central to the movie’s story. The Yautja consider it the ultimate predator, not just on Genna, but across many worlds. This Kalisk, from the Badlands, is incredibly intelligent and was long thought to be nearly impossible to kill because it can heal very quickly.
Kalisk are covered in long, black quills and have tough, armored skin. They also have expandable jaws filled with rows of teeth, a long, gripping tail, and a long tongue similar to a tentacle. Interestingly, a small creature named Bud, who became friends with Dek and Thia, turned out to be a young Kalisk.
The Kalisk and Bud are stand-out creatures in the movie, fulfilling key roles and providing plenty of thrills. They’re arguably among the most important and exciting creatures featured. However, we found one other creature in Predator: Badlands that we enjoyed even more.
1. Imbre Anguis/Spitter Eel
The Imbre Anguis, also known as the Spitter Eel, is arguably the coolest creature on this list. This highly intelligent and loyal animal bonds with Dek after he provides it with food and friendship. It effectively becomes a living, organic version of the Yautja’s traditional shoulder-mounted plasmacaster.
The Imbre Anguis, a creature that spits highly acidic venom, was a powerful weapon against the synthetic beings of Weyland-Yutani, quickly dissolving anything in its path. This specific Spitter Eel showed incredible loyalty, even giving its life to protect Dek during the final battle. Though not the largest creature in the Genna ecosystem of Predator: Badlands, we found the Spitter Eel to be the most remarkable.
Predator: Badlands is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
