All 7 Hargreeves siblings from The Umbrella Academy, ranked from worst to best
As a fan who’s journeyed through the Umbrella Academy series, I must say that each sibling has their unique charm and depth, much like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re gonna get!
On August 8, 2024, the climactic fourth season of “The Umbrella Academy” premiered on Netflix. To honor this fantastic Netflix original series that mirrors Gerard Way’s graphic novel series, we’re going to compare and rank the seven extraordinary Hargreeves siblings in order from least impressive to most outstanding.
As a longtime fan of graphic novels and a connoisseur of quirky, character-driven narratives, I must say that I was initially taken aback by the complexity and depth of the characters in The Umbrella Academy. Coming from a life filled with more straightforward stories, I expected this series to be an easy watch, with clear favorites emerging quickly. However, as I delved deeper into the final six episodes, I found myself appreciating each character more and more, regardless of their ranking in the story.
Let’s get the ranking started with Ben, the seventh-best of the Hargreeves siblings.

7. Ben (Justin H. Min)
To be clear, I haven’t disliked Ben all along; instead, I’ve admired him as a well-crafted character, and Justin H. Min has truly showcased his acting prowess in bringing him to life. However, we’ve had significantly less screen time with Ben compared to the other siblings throughout the series. That changes dramatically in season 4, where we uncover some fascinating details about Ben and his intricate ties to the ongoing narrative – shedding light on why things have unfolded as they have.
In the initial stages of the show, I found myself appreciating Ben immensely. His selfless act of giving up his life to protect others was truly commendable. However, it’s interesting to note that each of the Hargreeves siblings assumes this heroic role at some point throughout the series.
As the third season arrived with the debut of the Sparrow Academy, my view of Ben started to lean towards a less favorable perspective. While I’m not convinced that Ben is entirely evil, it’s become evident that he can be quite self-centered and self-serving compared to many of his siblings on occasion.
It’s wonderful that we ultimately discovered the authentic Ben, but it’s challenging to compensate for the time we couldn’t spend together earlier on.
6. Luther (Tom Hopper)
I hate ranking Luther so low because Luther is truly an awesome character. Tom Hopper plays Luther so well, but somebody has to be sixth, and my guy Luthor takes that spot.
In my view, I believe that Luther, along with Viktor and Allison, resides on the third level. The Spaceman is usually entertaining, and Luther frequently adds humor to the series. Even within their family, Luther has a knack for making others laugh or giving them a look that says, as we all know, he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Luther is truly versatile; he exhibits immense affection and loyalty towards his family and Sloane in season 3. Unfortunately, he endures repeated pain, yet consistently proves his reliability, a trait evident in his significant contributions during season 4.
5. Viktor (Elliot Page)
Among the Hargreeves siblings, Viktor stands out as particularly empathetic. Right from the beginning of the show, it’s apparent that Viktor felt isolated as a child, and this persisted into his adult years throughout the initial seasons and even up until season 4’s conclusion. Throughout the series, Viktor frequently underscored the emotional wounds inflicted by their father for keeping him out of the spotlight.
Initially, I found it challenging to relate to Viktor’s story beyond recognizing that he was often excluded from Umbrella Academy missions, given minimal family involvement, and felt isolated with no support in a harsh environment. However, in the second season, it was heartening to witness Viktor forge a bond with Sissy, portrayed by Marin Ireland. Unfortunately, their relationship proved temporary, leaving Viktor deeply saddened.
Over the course of the series, we witness Viktor’s personal evolution. He forms strong bonds with the family and frequently works alongside them on specific tasks related to their mission. In the climactic moments, when the other Hargreeves members step back, Viktor makes one last valiant attempt to prevent Ben from undergoing The Cleanse. This act of defiance underscores Viktor’s personal growth throughout the four seasons. Essentially, Viktor’s journey is a significant narrative thread within the series, and his courageous action to protect one of his siblings deserves recognition.
4. Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman)
For me, Allison, one of the Hargreeves siblings, has always held a central position. Unlike some others, she didn’t often irritate me, even considering her errors and peculiarities. She wasn’t my most loved character, but I’ve found myself drawn to her storyline, appreciating both her evolution and the consistency in her character throughout the narrative.
In the initial season, I found myself struggling to grasp why Allison appeared so upset with her siblings. She was juggling numerous issues and refused to acknowledge faults in her personal relationships with her husband and daughter. As the storyline unfolded, it became evident that Allison, like many of us, was seeking love and validation amidst a flawed society.
Following the first season, it became evident that Allison was among the top characters in the show. Her portrayal during the Civil Rights Era in Dallas and associated plotlines were captivating. My preferred season is the third one, as it showcases Allison. In the fourth season, we witness Allison assuming a motherly role towards Klaus, who’s having a tough time.
Beyond everything else, Allison’s abilities make for an incredibly fascinating element within the series. It seems fair to place her among the top four of the Hargreeves siblings, right in the midpoint.
3. Diego (David Castañeda)
Among the siblings from The Umbrella Academy, Diego Hargreeves has consistently stood out near the top for me. His character is truly invigorating – always entangled in some form of turmoil or upset, yet exuding positive energy, humor, and being an exceptional ally to have during a confrontation.
He often projects an image of being a robust, hardened character, yet there are instances when he displays vulnerability. Interestingly, beneath that tough exterior might reside the tenderest heart among the Hargreeves clan. However, he struggles to navigate his emotions effectively and articulate them positively.
In my perspective, Diego has been a constant source of humor. Beneath his tough exterior, he seems to be yearning for love and nurturing, much like the rest of his family, which sometimes becomes apparent. Compared to some of his siblings, Diego appears to be making progress in overcoming his past traumas and exploring his emotions more deeply. When Diego interacts with Lila and their relationship blossoms, he truly shines.
During the fourth season, tension and conflicts arise between Diego and Lila, as well as his family, causing him to take a less prominent role. Consequently, it’s only towards the closing chapters of the series where we are able to truly appreciate Diego’s finest attributes.
2. Five (Aidan Gallagher)
Initially, Five held a much lower position on my ranking. To be honest, I had some reservations about him in the early stages of the series, especially during the first season. There was something about him that left me puzzled – I couldn’t quite grasp his character, appreciate why he seemed superior to his siblings, or understand his arrogance.
During my recent rewatch of season 3 and upon finishing the final season, a realization struck me: I’ve developed quite an affinity for the character Five! Among the Hargreeves siblings, he seems to be the one who is genuinely striving to rectify all these issues. His actions are driven by concern for his family’s wellbeing. He consistently works towards saving the world. Above all, Five embodies selflessness more than any other sibling.
Gallagher delivers an outstanding performance as Five. Despite being the youngest among the cast, he consistently matches up against seasoned actors in scene after scene. Few actors can effectively portray this character, and it seems Gallagher often doesn’t receive the recognition he deserves.
Five is often overlooked, yet crucial in keeping the Hargreeves family united. Whenever they need him, he’s there. That’s what makes him one of the standout siblings, just slightly behind the best.
1. Klaus (Robert Sheehan)
Without a shadow of a doubt, Klaus stands out as the most exceptional member among the Hargreeves siblings. Moreover, he is undeniably the most captivating character in the popular TV series, The Umbrella Academy. Despite facing numerous hardships on his path, it’s been an absolute pleasure to witness Klaus evolve, transform, and keep audiences enthralled with his self-awareness and cynical wit.
As a gamer, I’m the one who consistently steps up when it counts. I don’t always get things right, but I carry the heaviest load. We all grapple with the strain and obligation that our abilities impose, yet only my power is an unrelenting symbol of the heartache and loss our family has endured. Somehow, I find the strength to keep pushing forward, even when I’m on the brink. Fortunately, my family stands by me more often than not.
I find Klaus captivating due to his incredible transformation throughout the series, showcasing various aspects of his character across diverse situations. Each season introduces a fresh portrayal of Klaus that leaves audiences spellbound. He’s a complex figure who battles addiction and recovery, leads cults, suffers from hypochondria in season 4, and yearns for life extension. What’s fascinating is that he has died numerous times! It’s all amazingly intriguing!
