The Assassin,” a fresh take on comedy-mystery-thriller, now available on Prime Video, is the latest offering from the minds behind “The Tourist.
This six-part series is led by Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore. It focuses on the story of a troubled relationship between Julie (played by Hawes) and her son Edward (portrayed by Highmore), who are clearly not your average mother and son.
After a significant period of being apart, Edward discovers that she used to be a professional killer who has since retired. To complicate things further, as their past actions start coming back to haunt them, they are compelled to flee and journey through various European countries.
Hawes and Highmore, not only in their roles as executive producers, but also themselves, are accompanied by Gina Gershon, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Richard Dormer, Jack Davenport, and Alan Dale. Concurrently, the real-life brothers Harry and Jack Williams, known for creating shows such as The Tourist, Angela Black, and Liar, are credited as co-creators.
After the debut of “The Assassin” on July 25th, this crime drama has been showered with praise. The Guardian awarded it five stars and praised it as “elegant, clever, well-written, and tightly structured,” while also noting that it kept viewers captivated at all times with the perfect blend of gravity and entertainment.

Simultaneously, the Radio Times chose to rate The Assassin with four stars, praising it as an impressive visual masterpiece.
As a devoted fan, I must say that what truly captivates me about this show is undeniably the dynamic between Julie and Edward. The witty banter exchanged between them, reminiscent of a mother and son, is masterfully written, immensely enjoyable, and leaves me in stitches with laughter throughout each episode.
Discussing her character in the show, Hawes said to Yahoo UK: “It feels more relatable than a figure like James Bond.

The actor remarked, “It was an utterly enjoyable experience!” He continued, “Joining Jack, Harry, and Freddie made it even better. Plus, the entire setup was irresistible – we spent five exhilarating months in Athens with a fantastic ensemble of colleagues.
During an interview with The Radio Times Writers’ Room, the Williams brothers disclosed that they penned the screenplay for ‘The Assassin’ shortly following ‘The Tourist’.
As a gamer crafting my latest game scenario, I’ve been eager to develop a unique relationship between a protagonist and his virtual father figure – a son-father duo with a touch of estrangement. It adds an intriguing layer of complexity that keeps players guessing.
In most dramas, this type of relationship isn’t commonly portrayed, and when it is, it often leans towards being overly dramatic or stiff. However, in terms of a central pairing, I can’t recall many shows that have this specific tone as their core.
All six episodes of The Assassin are now available to stream on Prime Video.
The latest print edition from Digital Spy is available! You can grab the Oasis – Live in ’25 issue either at your local newsstand or online, currently going for only £8.99.
