All 4 Deadpool movies ranked from worst to best
As a longtime admirer of the Merc with a Mouth, I must say that my journey through the world of Deadpool has been nothing short of exhilarating! From the heartwrenching tale of love and loss in Deadpool 2 to the genius masterpiece that was the first film, it’s clear that these movies know how to deliver both emotional depth and side-splitting humor.
Wade Wilson is a truly unique character in every sense; one of Marvel Comics’ most indelible personalities, he has been astonishing, infuriating, and spellbinding readers for many years. Now, he’s made his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he continues to astound us all once more.
One of the most successful franchises is the collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine, an achievement made all the more impressive given it was achieved in our 34th film. This is partly because Deadpool’s cinematic representation has been a triumph, contributing to his status as a movie titan on his own merit.
Ryan Reynolds’ wise-cracking character, Deadpool, debuted on the big screen in 2016 (not referring to your film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), and he’s been creating quite a stir ever since. It’s impressive for a lesser-known antihero, given the abundance of well-known, larger-than-life superheroes in the world.
In terms of the latest addition to the Deadpool series, we’re looking at its third appearance within the franchise (the fourth film featuring Reynolds as the character). However, how does it stack up against its predecessors? Here’s the truth: The Deadpool trilogy is remarkably consistent in quality, making a definitive ranking quite challenging. Frankly, when movies are this entertaining, it could have easily gone either way for the series.
Oh what the heck, let’s include X-Men Origins: Wolverine too!
4. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Prior to Deadpool becoming a widely recognized character in blockbuster movies, an incredibly unconventional and flamboyant version of him made an appearance in the film “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” Played by Ryan Reynolds, this Deadpool was a companion of Logan’s, but after Major William Stryker conducted experiments on him, he became a far deadlier adversary than ever before – specifically engineered to eliminate Wolverine. On the surface, it sounds chilling. However, in practice, it fell short of expectations.
It was incredibly hard to fathom creating Deadpool without speech capabilities, since he’s known as “The Merc With A Mouth.” Essentially, they took away his means of talking after his character talked excessively before the experiment, but it seemed like an odd creative decision in a film that had its fair share of problems to start with.
The movie titled “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” is often criticized as being among the less impressive X-Men films for several reasons. Personally, I don’t find it problematic since Hugh Jackman delivers a powerful performance, and the climactic battle between Wolverine and what appears to be Deadpool is quite thrilling. However, it’s important to note that the adversary isn’t actually Deadpool. Admittedly, it does fall short compared to other X-Men movies; this point is hard to contest.
On its own, the film is decent, but compared to other Deadpool movies, it falls short significantly. However, it was exciting to witness these two characters together for the first time, setting up an even better confrontation between them fifteen years down the line.
3. Deadpool 2
Following the triumph of Deadpool, another installment arrived only two years after – Deadpool 2. While building upon its forerunner’s foundation, this sequel also introduced fresh narrative elements that gave it a distinctive identity, enabling it to firmly establish itself on its own merits. To put it simply, it stood tall and steadfast.
In this storyline, family is the central theme, as Wade Wilson found himself grappling with the possibility of losing his most cherished person: his adored Vanessa. After witnessing her demise, Wade vowed to hunt down her assassins and sought redemption by trying to improve himself. However, this path led him to imprisonment instead. Yet, behind bars, he was given a chance to make amends, when the arrival of Cable (brilliantly portrayed by Josh Brolin) disrupted everything.
In “Deadpool 2,” its exploration of family sets it apart, offering viewers a deeply touching tale about Wade, who yearns for a world with Vanessa, yet discovers he still has loved ones who care for him. The introduction of the X-Force and the over-the-top action sequences make “Deadpool 2” an exceptional follow-up worth watching.
2. Deadpool
Calling Deadpool a mere work of genius is somewhat of an understatement. It was such a brilliant piece of work, in fact, that this boisterous, unconventional, low-budget superhero film about an antihero not commonly known to the mainstream movie audience skyrocketed into a box office sensation, transforming Deadpool into a cinematic titan at breakneck speed. You can now see why we needed additional words to fully convey its impact.
2016’s movie narrated the tale of Wade Wilson, a Marvel Comics character, who underwent transformations that made him an immortal metahuman with the ability to regenerate his own tissue following a treatment aimed at curing his cancer. Known as Deadpool, he sought revenge on those who had subjected him to such treatments and simultaneously struggled to find the courage to reveal his transformed self to the love of his life, whom he had left behind to wage his battles independently.
To effectively portray Deadpool, its main character, was essential, and there’s hardly anyone who would disagree that it succeeded. Ryan Reynolds brilliantly embodied Wade Wilson’s irrepressibly irritating persona, masterfully balancing humor, wit, and annoyance on the silver screen (while also effortlessly breaking the fourth wall). He managed to be incredibly charming, clever, and frustrating all at once, which perfectly encapsulates Deadpool.
The movie skillfully combined tender moments and laughter, featuring a higher level of violence and adult humor compared to what the superhero genre typically offers from the previous decade. Everything fit perfectly.
1. Deadpool and Wolverine
2024’s highly-anticipated film, “Deadpool and Wolverine“, generated massive excitement ever since its announcement two years earlier. Living up to all that hype was no small feat, but with its blockbuster box office performance, it certainly delivered.
For Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, this was an eagerly anticipated collaboration; a moment for Reynolds to finally realize his dream of a Wolverine crossover, while giving Jackman the opportunity to re-emerge from X-Men retirement in a screen-accurate suit that fans had been eagerly anticipating. The end result was a film that beautifully combined these elements and more, showcasing both its daring ambition and unbridled wildness.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the story unfolds as Deadpool teams up with a distinct version of Wolverine to prevent their universe from being destroyed. The ensuing journey for our titular pair is nothing less than spectacular, demonstrating that a Deadpool and Wolverine collaboration was well worth the wait of over a decade and a half.
Bid adieu to the Fox X-Men realm in a flawless fashion, and welcome a thrilling commencement to a fresh chapter for both within the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Deadpool and Wolverine exceeded all our expectations and offered even more delight.
