All 3 Venom movies ranked from worst to best

As someone who’s been through quite a few blockbusters in my time, I must say that the Venom trilogy has left quite an impression. The last installment, Venom: The Last Dance, was a rollercoaster ride that had me on the edge of my seat!

Initially, it seemed unlikely that Venom would lead a film series, given his status as Spider-Man’s arch-nemesis in Marvel Comics. Despite being one of the most beloved villains, he was still a villain at heart. However, the alien symbiote managed to defy expectations, garnering popularity comparable to its more renowned adversary and eventually starring in its own movie franchise.

Before the debut of Venom, the character previously appeared in a supporting role within Spider-Man 3 from 2007. The visual effects in that film were remarkably realistic, yet viewers remained skeptical due to the excessive number of characters, making it difficult for any villains to stand out. However, this wasn’t an issue with Venom released in 2018, as it focused on Eddie Brock and his symbiote, offering audiences a truly unconventional cinematic experience.

In the movie franchise, Tom Hardy plays a character who initially resists taking on the role of a hero. This character forms an unusual bond with a symbiote alien residing within him. The duo, Eddie and Venom, create quite a dynamic duo, and their unpredictable relationship has won the hearts of fans worldwide.

The tale of the Sony Pictures duo concludes with “Venom: The Final Dance,” promising a mix of bittersweet emotions but also a wildly entertaining experience. This realization paves the way for us to revisit the Venom series, compare all three films, and determine their respective ranks.

Honorable mention: Spider-Man: No Way Home

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” while connected, has a tenuous tie to the Venom series. Since Sony is responsible for producing the Spider-Man films in collaboration with Marvel Studios, they managed to include a nod to their Venom film saga thanks to the movie’s intricate multiverse narrative (in which Spider-Man characters from various realities intersect with the MCU).

In the scene following the credits, Tom Hardy makes an appearance. This occurs after the post-credits sequence in “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”. He’s casually seated at a bar, but is then abruptly drawn back into his own universe, leaving behind a hint of the alien symbiote for some character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to possibly connect with.

In a fair assessment, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” stands out as the top film featuring Venom, but since it’s not officially part of the “Venom” trilogy, it can’t be included in the primary ranking. However, we can still acknowledge its excellence separately.

3. Venom: Let There Be Carnage

One term that encapsulates the essence of the initial Venom film is “entertaining.” The movie was so wildly unconventional that viewers found themselves enjoying the rollercoaster ride, regardless of whether they fully believed the events unfolding on screen. Despite its best efforts, the 2021 sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, didn’t quite replicate the original’s success in this regard.

The movie followed the same concise structure, swiftly establishing its foundation and maintaining a compact duration to prevent overstaying its welcome. However, due to Carnage being such a complex character, this brevity seemed to be a disadvantage. As the story unfolded, it moved quickly, brushing past inconsistencies in tone and doubtful plot twists without allowing viewers to fully grasp what was happening. Events transpired because they could, and at times, it became overwhelming.

Cletus Kasady certainly worked as an intimidating villain and he seemed evil enough to serve as a host for Carnage but the character was extremely underdeveloped, with only the beginnings of a backstory trickling through in the film’s final act. Nevertheless, Woody Harrelson committed to the role and delivered on all fronts as the chilling antagonist.

The movie faced challenges with its overall feel, as its grim narrative overshadowed the lightheartedness that the initial film excelled at. While moments of humor were present, they were overshadowed by a overly dramatic and under-refined storyline that failed to fully utilize its characters.

2. Venom: The Last Dance

In “Venom: The Last Dance,” we find ourselves at the end of the Venom trilogy, where the peculiar relationship between Eddie Brock and Venom reaches its climax. At times, the narrative strays, but let me tell you, the grand finale fight scene is nothing short of extraordinary – an unparalleled spectacle that only Venom could orchestrate! It’s a real rollercoaster ride, and it’s so over-the-top, it’s perfect for our favorite anti-hero.

In this movie, Knull, also known as The King in Black, dispatches a group of destructive beings called Xenophages to pursue an unexpected duo. This action sets off a sequence of events that eventually leads Venom to understand that his native world is encroaching upon him. These Xenophages are massive, aggressive creatures whose purpose is to obliterate anything that crosses their path, making them the most formidable adversary that Venom and Eddie have ever encountered – an assertion worth noting given they’ve recently concluded a battle against Carnage.

The truth is that Venom: The Last Dance is a tale of two halves. The first is slow, drawn out, and not really capable of making the most of its intriguing storyline, while the second is outrageously larger-than-life, ridiculously entertaining, and insane to the end; everything that we’ve come to know and love from the Venom franchise. It’s also quite emotional, which is a reminder that this franchise is capable of moments of depth whenever it wants to be. Some more of those wouldn’t have gone amiss throughout the three movies, but there is no denying this one hits here.

The Last Dance” offers an overall enjoyable conclusion to a distinctive film series, but it could have been even better if the entire film was as powerful as its climactic scenes. Specifically, the portrayal of Knull seemed somewhat underwhelming compared to expectations.

1. Venom

Let’s rewind to the start with the movie Venom. I pondered over which movie in this trilogy was my favorite, and surprisingly, the second half of The Last Dance gave a strong challenge. However, the uncomplicated storyline of the first film tipped the scales for me.

The Venom films aren’t known for their intricate plots, instead opting for straightforward narratives over deep emotional exploration. However, the first film carries off this style best, delivering a thrilling 90-minute rollercoaster ride that completely immerses you and leaves all other worries behind while you’re watching it.

Tom Hardy delivered a compelling first appearance as the grittier Eddie Brock. However, what truly makes Venom successful is that Hardy can seamlessly adapt to whatever the script demands at any moment. In the opening act, he convincingly portrays a dedicated journalist, and in the subsequent acts, he excels in his comedic roles as both Eddie and Venom, making for an engaging and humorous performance overall.

The Venom films confidently stick to their identity, with the first movie laying the foundation for this from the beginning. These movies aren’t meant to be deep, philosophical masterpieces that challenge our thinking; instead, they are wild, action-packed adventures specifically made for fun and excitement, and they excel at delivering just that.

In a captivating manner, Venom kept viewers yearning for more, although the series may not have consistently surpassed predictions, it consistently met its high standards. As an enthusiast of entertainment, one could hardly request anything better. (Paraphrased)
