It seems that six years after its initial release, there’s been progress on the delayed follow-up for this movie series. The director, Robert Rodriguez, recently shared some optimistic news regarding the upcoming sequel.
In a recent interview, Rodriguez expressed his desire to create another film like Alita: Battle Angel. He mentioned that remnants of the movie set are still present at his studio. Essentially, he stated that he has an entire city-like set in his parking lot, with 20-foot ceilings and seven streets. This impressive structure is said to be one of the largest standing sets in the country, if not the world. Alita: Battle Angel debuted in 2019, with Rosa Salazar portraying Alita through performance-capture CGI animation.
Following the manga series penned by Yukito Kishiro, I find myself immersed in the tale of Alita, a cyborg girl who stirs back to life in a fresh vessel. As I navigate through her journey, I’m uncovering fragments of her past and seeking answers about my destiny in a world brimming with robots and cybernetic advancements. Since its debut, the film’s creative force, cast, and enthusiasts have all expressed hope that a sequel will eventually materialize.
For now, it appears the next installment of the Alita series is in a holding pattern, but it’s following a path reminiscent of its predecessor. The original film was first announced back in 2003 and didn’t hit screens until more than a decade later due to James Cameron’s commitments on other projects. As the producer and screenwriter for the first Alita: Battle Angel movie, Cameron played a significant role in its production. The film earned $405 million globally on a budget between $150-200 million, with both Cameron and Rodriguez suggesting that there’s enough content to make “several” sequels.
Fans Continue to Campaign for an Alita Sequel

Upon its debut in 2019, Alita: Battle Angel sparked a variety of responses from critics, garnering a 61% positive response on Rotten Tomatoes. Numerous reviewers felt that the movie’s narrative failed to match the spectacular visual effects it boasted. However, against all odds, this film has developed an immense following among fans, as evidenced by its 91% approval rating from audience members on Rotten Tomatoes, showcasing their deep affection for the film.
2020 saw social media movements urging the cinema re-release of the film, with Cameron joining forces under the ‘#AlitaArmy’ banner. However, specific updates about the sequel are rare at this point; Rodriguez’s last project was 2023’s “Spy Kids: Armageddon” for Netflix, while Cameron has a busy schedule from 2025 to 2029. It remains uncertain if an Alita sequel can be produced within the upcoming years.
Alita: Battle Angel is available on Blu-ray and for purchase on all major digital retailers.
