Alison Hammond “devastated” as she says This Morning boss “doesn’t want to leave”

As a gamer who has seen countless plot twists and character departures in my virtual adventures, I must say that Alison Hammond‘s heartfelt tribute to Martin Frizell feels all too real. The bond they share, forged over a decade of collaboration on “This Morning,” mirrors the camaraderie between a seasoned adventurer and their loyal guide in an epic saga.

Alison Hammond has opened up on This Morning boss Martin Frizell’s exit from the breakfast show.

Yesterday (on November 27), Frizell, who became the editor of the ITV show in 2014, revealed his intention to resign in the spring of 2025.

After hearing the surprising announcement, presenter Hammond expressed her deep sadness during a chat with Chris Evans on his Virgin Radio program.

For a decade, I’ve collaborated with Martin. Honestly, I’m deeply saddened by this news. He’s been an integral part of our production. Given his reasons for departing, I can completely empathize with him.

Everyone is familiar with his wife, Fiona Phillips. It’s clear why he’s choosing to depart, and it’s a harmonious decision. However, he doesn’t wish to go; instead, he’s compelled by familial obligations. We all sympathize with the situation he finds himself in.

2023 saw the disclosure that Frizell’s spouse, Phillips, whom he married in 1997, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Alison went on to say, “It was him who helped me get back on television. He suggested, ‘Why don’t we feature Alison? She’s quite talented.’

Without his help, you wouldn’t have encountered Alison Hammond on television. Therefore, we owe him a significant debt. Essentially, we owe Alison Hammond to him. He played a crucial role in my return to TV; it was around 2007 when I had fallen off the screen.

Initially, I appeared on the show this morning, but they didn’t utilize me. Later, Martin joined the team and inquired, “Why aren’t we utilizing Alison Hammond?”. It was Martin who essentially transformed me into a woman on that show.

I’m deeply grateful for his kindness. He’s truly exceptional and his absence will be felt greatly. We’ve been discussing his departure since we got an email about it yesterday. Everyone is heartbroken, as the news has left us all feeling quite sad. I sent him a small message expressing my feelings. Clearly, he’s going through a tough time. This situation is emotional for everyone involved.

In a statement released by The Sun, Frizell announced that next year, he anticipates changes in his family priorities which require him to devote more time to them, hence his decision to step down.

“I love my team at ITV and will miss them and the thrill of live telly, but it’s an always on, 24 hours a day, seven days a week commitment and I won’t be able to do both.

It’s been an honor to oversee exceptional presenters and producers. Together, we’ve created over 6,000 hours of live topical television programming. This equates to approximately 20,000 individual segments. While awards are always appreciated, what I take the most pride in is the impact we’ve had on people’s lives. Our initiatives on anti-suicide, menopause, testicular cancer, and various ‘how-to’ pieces have touched many lives, even saving some through our campaigns.

“This juggernaut is the toughest test for any broadcast journalist.”

This Morning airs Mondays through Fridays on ITV1 and ITVX.
