Alien: Romulus Sequel Begins Shooting Soon Says Director Fede Álvarez

The filmmaker responsible for hits such as 2013’s “Evil Dead”, “Don’t Breathe”, and last year’s revival of “Alien” titled “Alien: Romulus”, Fede Álvarez, has recently given an update on a potential sequel that is sure to send shivers down the spines of devoted fans. Conversations regarding a sequel started swiftly after “Romulus” garnered popularity and ranked high among the series’ films. Although whispers of a possible continuation circulated, no official announcement has been made yet. However, the director has now shed light on the sequel’s status. If you are a fan of the horror-sci-fi genre, you may want to pay close attention to the following details.

Álvarez graced the guest of honor spot on the podcast “Marea Nocturna“, which delves into all things horror. The hosts, Desirée de Fez, Jordi Sánchez-Navarro, Xavi Sánchez Pons, and Ángel Sala, guided him through a conversation about his career milestones. This journey covered his early days as an amateur director, shooting homemade films in Uruguay’s streets. His short film “Panic Attack! ” from 2009 caught the attention of Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert (creators of Ghost House Pictures), leading to an offer for him to remake “Evil Dead“. This opportunity fulfilled a lifelong dream for him.

In his filmmaking career so far, Álvarez has seen great success with “Romulus,” which also happens to be the second highest-earning film in the “Alien” series and the top-grossing horror movie of 2024. This blockbuster horror sci-fi sequel was a resounding hit, prompting producers to mull over another sequel. As of now, the title for the potential follow-up remains undecided, but Álvarez has offered some insights into its current production stage.

At the moment, I find myself in the gap between films, focusing mainly on my role as a writer. In this phase, I often envision myself not directing the movie but just penning a story. And that’s exactly where I am at present. Specifically, we are working on a sequel to Romulus, and we’re deep into it. When I use ‘We,’ I’m referring to myself and Rodo [Sayagues], my regular co-writer in all my films. That’s what we’re engaged in every day at the moment.

The discussion shifted towards a lengthy exchange about sources of inspiration, film industry stories, and how Álvarez came to be known as the horror master. At the end of the podcast, the hosts invited the director to the upcoming Sitges Film Festival in Spain, scheduled for October. Interestingly, when asked about his availability, he hinted that he might not be able to attend due to a sequel being in production at that time. However, if the project required him to be in Europe, he expressed his willingness to go.

Ideally, I’ll be in the pre-production stage for the sequel by then, but if the production moves to Europe, I’ll need to go as well.

‘Alien: Romulus’ Brought Life Back Into the Franchise

In a surprising twist for Alien enthusiasts, the film Romulus disguised itself as an ordinary sequel but cleverly employed franchise elements to lure viewers in. However, the script penned by Álvarez and Sayagues delved into horror conventions and developed intriguing characters that outshone their typical counterparts. This revitalized the Alien universe for those who had grown skeptical following Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant. Álvarez’s sequel stripped away the philosophical subplots, instead emphasizing the raw terror reminiscent of the original films. The movie effectively transported us back to space, leaving us with the eerie sensation that no one could hear our screams.
