Alien: Romulus is one of 10 new scary movies releasing this week
As a seasoned horror and thriller enthusiast who has weathered countless chilling tales, I can confidently say that this week is shaping up to be a rollercoaster ride of suspenseful delights! The upcoming release of Alien: Romulus has me positively quivering with anticipation. Ever since the original Alien sent my heart racing and left me sleepless for nights on end, I’ve been hooked on this franchise.
As someone who has been a fan of science fiction for as long as I can remember, I must say that this week’s biggest release, “Alien: Romulus,” has me absolutely thrilled. With its intriguing plot and stunning visual effects, it looks like one of the summer’s most anticipated movies, and I can’t wait to see it on the big screen.
At your home, a variety of movies and some true crime documentaries are arriving on streaming and VOD platforms. These include the thriller “Mothers’ Instinct,” starring Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, as well as another Laci Peterson documentary series available on Netflix. Additionally, a fresh episode of season 4 for the show “Evil” will stream on Thursday on Paramount+.

Consumed (Aug. 16, VOD)
In the heart of the gaming world, here I am, immersed in the chilling tale of “Consumed.” Starring Devon Sawa from the infamous “Chucky,” this gripping thriller follows a couple ensnared in a nightmare between a monstrous entity that swallows skin and a vengeful madman. The stakes are high, as we navigate through a labyrinth of terror and suspense.
Dancing Village: The Curse Begins (Aug. 16, Shudder)
As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersing myself in the rich tapestry of global cinema, I’m always eager to discover new and exciting films that showcase unique cultures and stories. With this in mind, I can hardly contain my excitement for Shudder’s upcoming August exclusive film, an Indonesian production based on a novel by SimpleMan. Having followed its previous release in Indonesia, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see it make its US debut this week.
On an enigmatic island, Mila (Maudy Effrosina), her cousin, and some companions stumble upon the revelation that a legendary entity has been visiting their village. They find themselves unwillingly involved in a ritual to determine the next “Dawuh,” an individual condemned to dance until they perish.
Worst Ex Ever (Aug. 14, Netflix)
As a devoted gamer and true-crime enthusiast, diving back into the gripping world of Netflix’s/Blumhouse TV’s franchise feels like stepping foot into another dimension. The latest addition to this chilling collection, titled Worst Ex Ever, takes me on yet another journey into the shadowy corners of love gone wrong.
American Murder: Laci Peterson (Aug. 14, Netflix)
Apart from “Worst Ex Ever”, Netflix is also planning to debut a documentary series focusing on the vanishing and subsequent homicide of Laci Peterson. This series will mark the first time that Laci’s mother and some of her close friends share their experiences about this heartbreaking murder in public.
We Are Zombies (Aug. 13, Screambox)
In the “zombie apocalypse” subgenre, the unconventional story, titled “We Are Zombies“, unfolds in a world where humans and zombies live side by side harmoniously. However, a malicious corporation jeopardizes this harmony, and a band of friends join forces to thwart their nefarious plans.
Mothers’ Instinct (Aug. 13, VOD)
In July, the American adaptation of a 2018 French movie, starring Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway, premiered in selected cinemas. Starting from next Tuesday, it will be available for viewing on Video On Demand platforms.
The King Tide (Aug. 16, VOD)
In a quaint coastal hamlet of Canada, this suspenseful tale unfolds. Certain townsfolk hail a child rumored to possess extraordinary abilities as a possible redeemer, yet many remain skeptical about her supposed supernatural skills, stirring up tension that threatens to ignite a civil conflict within the village.
The Deliverance (Aug. 16, Theaters)
According to the alleged supernatural events experienced by the Ammons family, “The Deliverance” is a fresh exorcism-themed horror movie from Lee Daniels. This Netflix Original is set for its global premiere later this month, though it will also be shown in select cinemas on August 16.
Skincare (Aug. 16, Theaters)
Combining elements of horror and crime drama, the film Skincare presents Elizabeth Banks in the role of Hope, a skincare specialist with dreams to create her own product line. However, when a rival boutique opens near hers, Hope is driven by a desire for retribution against the person she suspects is intentionally undermining both her and her enterprise. Joining her on screen are Nathan Fillion, Lewis Pullman, and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez.
