The 2024 movie Alien: Romulus, which revived the Alien film series for Disney, is now available to stream on Netflix as of January 1st.
Alien: Romulus is a new beginning for the franchise. It doesn’t follow the story of Ripley from the original Alien films, or David from Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Instead, it introduces a completely new, younger group of characters who quickly find themselves in a terrifying situation: trapped with a Xenomorph in a confined space.
Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus revitalizes the franchise, offering a fresh take on the classic Alien films. By centering the story on a more intimate scale, Álvarez brings a new perspective and adds compelling themes to the series.
This story has connections to the original Alien films, but it isn’t a direct continuation or backstory to those movies.
Alien: Romulus gives the Alien Series a New Lease on Life
Alien: Romulus is the first new film in the Alien franchise in years. It was a major hit with audiences, bringing in $350.9 million worldwide on an $80 million budget.
The film received positive reviews, with an 80% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers loved it even more, giving it an 88% approval rating on the site.
Following the success of Alien: Romulus, Disney has fast-tracked a sequel. While it’s unclear if director Fede Álvarez will return to direct, he did complete the screenplay.
I never really intended to direct a sequel to Romulus. From the start, we all knew this was a one-and-done project. Directors I admire like James Cameron and David Fincher have also done just one film in a franchise. Of course, Ridley Scott, as the creator, is free to make as many as he wants,” Álvarez explained at HorrorHound Weekend in February 2025.
He explained that they really wanted to write the story because they were attached to the characters they’d developed. They wanted to protect those characters and prevent anyone from immediately killing them off, referencing how Hicks and Newt were quickly killed in Alien 3. So, they wrote the story to ensure the characters survived, and now they’re happy to hand it over to someone else.
Fede Álvarez directed Alien: Romulus, a movie he wrote with Rodo Sayagues. The film features Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu in its cast.
Alien: Romulus is available to stream now on Netflix.
