Alien: Romulus “fixed” controversial Ian Holm role for home release
Director Fede Alvarez of the film “Alien: Resurrection (Romulus)” has disclosed that the contentious computer-generated imagery (CGI) featuring the late Ian Holm, who passed away in 2020, has been revised for the movie’s home edition.
Taking place after the occurrences in the movie ‘Alien’ and before ‘Aliens’, the film titled ‘Alien: Romulus‘ focuses on a group of youthful settlers as they come across a Xenomorph while trying to depart from their mining settlement.
In the movie, Holm, famously known for his role as Ash in “Alien” from 1979, reappeared in a part that didn’t impress fans much. His character this time around was Rook, a dismembered science officer.
Or, more casually:
Holm, who played Ash in the original “Alien,” made an underwhelming appearance in the new movie as the disconnected science officer called Rook.
In an interview with Empire, Alvarez disclosed that the contentious appearance was modified to align with the home video release of the movie. He explained that due to time constraints, it wasn’t feasible to perfect it for the initial cinema release.
As a gamer, I wish I had more time in post-production to perfect every detail. Frankly, there are certain shots where I felt the CGI effects were a tad too noticeable. If anyone has criticisms about these aspects, I completely understand and sympathize with their feelings.
The director confirmed that the home entertainment version of the film will showcase an upgraded, enhanced edition of the synthetic. He explained, “We’ve made improvements; we’ve made it even better for the current release. I successfully persuaded the studio to invest in perfecting it, ensuring everyone involved had sufficient time to complete and do it justice. It’s significantly improved now.
Shane Mahan, the animatronic craftsman, created Ian Holm’s animatronic figure using a head mold from “The Lord of the Rings,” and that was the sole existing one. For the home entertainment version, we decided to go back to more traditional puppetry. The result is significantly improved compared to the original.
The horror sequel is scheduled for a streaming debut on Wednesday, January 15th, offering enhanced CGI in its latest version on Disney+.
The movie “Romulus” can currently be purchased digitally from platforms like Prime Video, iTunes, Microsoft Store, and others in the United Kingdom. It’s set to debut on Disney+ on January 15th.
