Alien: Romulus first reactions land ahead of cinema release
As someone who has been an avid fan of the Alien franchise since the original was released back in the late ’70s, I must say that my excitement for Alien: Romulus has reached new heights after reading these initial reactions. The fact that it’s a rollercoaster ride with glorious gore and scares, as Germain Lussier puts it, is music to my ears.
As a long-time fan of the original Alien franchise, I must admit I was both excited and skeptical when I heard about Romulus, the latest addition to the series. Having grown up watching Ripley battle against these terrifying creatures, I’ve developed a soft spot for this sci-fi horror franchise. However, with so many failed attempts at reviving classic franchises, I couldn’t help but feel a tinge of apprehension.
In the interim between “Alien” and “Aliens,” a new film from director Fede Alvarez emerges, which follows a band of young space settlers, featuring actors like Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson. These characters encounter the lethal Xenomorph creature.
Before the premiere on August 16 in theaters, some fortunate viewers who’ve already watched Alien: Romulus are expressing their initial thoughts on Twitter.
So, does Alien: Romulus live up to the first two movies?
Gizmodo’s Germain Lussier described the experience as an “exciting, over-the-top rollercoaster journey” filled with “spectacular violence and frightening moments”. He also mentioned that it improves over time, culminating in a stunning climax during the third act.
“The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit commends it as exhibiting all the distinctive features you’d find in an ‘Alien’ movie, yet manages to steer clear of appealing to nostalgia or catering to fans, instead taking a wildly original turn.”
Courtney Howard from Variety found the film “Alien: Romulus” to be both captivating and haunting, describing it as “roughly exciting” and “beautifully desolate”. Meanwhile, Rachel Leishman from The Mary Sue hinted that “Alien: Romulus” is unpredictable, with its third act being particularly wild. She added that she enjoys the film’s unique direction.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel intrigued by the rumored climax of “Alien: Romulus.” According to Alvarez, it was described to Digital Spy as quite unsettling. However, this potentially groundbreaking ending might spark some controversy among fans.
Jake Hamilton commented that he enjoyed many aspects of “Alien: Romulus” – there were some genuinely inventive scenes in the initial acts that he found particularly engaging. However, the ending attempted a bold move that didn’t resonate with him and ended up leaving him feeling unsatisfied.
IGN’s Amelia Emberwing found the movie intriguing yet had reservations about it. She described it as “a puzzling piece” and explained: “It delivers chilling moments, but each sequence seems like a video game level, opening scene for a horror attraction, or Halloween haunt maze. The character development failed to resonate with me, even though I’m usually quite receptive.”
In an interview with Digital Spy prior to its launch, Alvarez revealed that the title “Alien: Romulus” isn’t solely referring to one of the vessels in the movie, but it also carries a covert implication.
As a gamer, I found the movie had multiple layers, but one that stood out was the exploration of what it really means to be someone’s sibling. What are our duties towards each other? Do we have any or none at all? It seems like they should protect us, and in turn, we should look after them too.
“Romulus and Remus obviously are a story of siblinghood that didn’t end well. Romulus murdered Remus, so there’s many, many elements that are connected with that creational myth of Rome.”
Alien: Romulus is released in cinemas on August 16.
