Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez explains title’s hidden meaning
As a long-time Alien franchise devotee with a heart full of nostalgia and a mind buzzing with trivia, I must say, the title “Alien: Romulus” has sent my anticipation through the roof! The subtlety and depth behind this seemingly simple moniker have me thrilled to uncover its secrets.
The movie titled “Alien: Romulus” hits theaters this week, yet the significance of its name has been a mystery… until today.
Most viewers assumed that “Romulus” would be a ship name in the film, much like it was for “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant”. However, in this case, “Romulus” actually refers to one of the two modules on the retired space station Renaissance, where the story unfolds.
Similarly to the two films mentioned before, the movie Alien: Romulus carries a concealed message that connects with its underlying themes.
As director and co-writer Fede Alvarez shared with Digital Spy, the primary connections in the story are familial, encompassing both surrogate siblings and biological ones. This provides various perspectives on the theme of sibling relationships.
“The film explores several topics, one of which delves into the essence of siblinghood: understanding one’s duties and roles. Is there a sense of responsibility between siblings? Does it exist or not? Should they be each other’s guardians, or vice versa? How do you perceive this bond?”
“The tale of Romulus and Remus is clearly one about brotherhood that didn’t have a happy ending. Ultimately, Romulus killed his own brother Remus, which has left numerous connections to this foundational story of the city of Rome.”
As a long-time fan of the “Alien” franchise, I found it quite intriguing to discover that the movie isn’t called “Alien: Remus”. Being familiar with various Easter eggs hidden in movies and games, I was curious about this choice. Upon further research, I learned that the name choice has a fascinating history rooted in the series’ lore. This small detail not only adds depth to the franchise but also demonstrates the attention to detail that goes into creating these masterpieces, something I greatly appreciate as a fan who enjoys uncovering hidden meanings and references.
“[Romulus] has seven letters, and this is part seven,” Alvarez revealed.
The upcoming film is not a prequel to Alien like Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, but rather it’s placed in the timeline between the original Alien and its sequel, Aliens.
As a devoted fan, I find myself eagerly anticipating the upcoming film, which is approximately two decades post-“Alien,” yet it subtly references “Aliens.” To put it into my own words, I view it as a continuation of the first film’s narrative thread. In essence, it’s like a blend of both cinematic giants, visually, aesthetically, and in terms of its storyline.
Readers can rest assured that the storyline in “Alien: Romulus” won’t contradict established lore, as Alvarez meticulously consulted Xenopedia, encompassing both the movie and additional non-film canon, to avoid any inconsistencies.
Alien: Romulus is released in cinemas on August 16.
