Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez defends controversial return

As a longtime fan of the Alien franchise who has fond memories of the original films, I must admit that my initial reaction to seeing Ian Holm reprising his role as Rook in Alien: Romulus was a mix of excitement and trepidation. On one hand, it’s always wonderful to see beloved actors return to their iconic roles, but on the other hand, the use of digital effects can sometimes feel like a cheat.

The film “Romulus,” a new addition to the “Alien” series, has garnered over $100 million globally, yet it hasn’t escaped debate.

Similar to movies such as “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “Rogue One”, the latest film employs digital technology to resurrect an actor who holds a special place in fans’ hearts, sparking controversy over this choice.

In a recent interview, film director Fede Alvarez, who was also involved in the scriptwriting, has spoken out about the debate and explained his reasons for making the controversial choices.

But if you haven’t seen Alien: Romulus yet, don’t read past the photo as there are spoilers ahead.

In the film “Alien: Romulus“, the character played by Ian Holm is not Ash from the original “Alien“. Instead, he assumes the role of Renaissance-era science officer Rook, who shares the same synthetic model as Ash and thus bears a striking resemblance to him.

In conversation with the Los Angeles Times, Alvarez stated that we weren’t attempting to replicate the acting prowess of a specific individual, as our focus lies on portraying a different character entirely.

“Both share a resemblance, but their underlying structure varies significantly. Initially, our plan was to construct an animatronic figure, followed by adding digital enhancements to the mouth and eyes based on the specific camera angles.”

Later on, the query surfaced, “What does it look like? Who is it?”. The intriguing character who didn’t show up again was Ian Holm.

Earlier, Alvarez stated his reason for reintroducing Holm: He believed Ash was the top-notch among them all and merited another appearance much like Michael Fassbender’s character, David, did.

He mentioned that Holm’s wife was overjoyed at the concept, and his relatives were among the initial ones to view a preliminary draft.

As I recently mourned the loss of my father, much like they did, it struck a chord with me when they spoke of bringing him back into their movie. His return brought both a familiar pain, mirroring my own grief, and an overwhelming joy, as if a piece of my heart had returned to life on screen.

Alien: Romulus is out now in cinemas.
