Alien: Earth Star Sydney Chandler Rejects Ripley Comparison
Star Sydney Chandler elaborates on the difficulty of likening her character to that of Ellen Ripley, as she finds such a comparison “unfeasible.
In a conversation, I shared my feelings about the character I portray in ‘Alien: Earth’, named Wendy. I made it clear that while I admire and respect Sigourney Weaver’s iconic role as Ellen Ripley, it’s unimaginable for me to compare my character with hers. However, I expressed my hope that the audience will appreciate Wendy as much as I cherish her, she being my all-time favorite character I’ve had the pleasure of playing.
In an interesting twist, showrunner Noah Hawley stated that the “Alien” franchise seems to embody a strong female presence. This is evident through the character of Ripley in the movies and also because the aliens themselves exhibit a matriarchal structure, with a queen leading them. As such, the series appears to be heavily centered around women’s experiences. Sydney’s character represents someone grappling with her place within this world, and on a deeper level, she questions whether humanity should continue to exist given its history.
Alien: Earth Is Set Prior to the Original Movie
In the making by showrunner Noah Hawley, the series Alien: Earth is scheduled to unfold two years before the occurrences in Ridley Scott’s Alien. The storyline will trace the fate of a spacecraft’s survivors who find themselves on Earth, accompanied by several Xenomorph perils. In this upcoming series, Alien: Earth, Chandler will portray Wendy, a woman with an adult physique and the mind of a child. Alongside her synth mentor Kirsh (played by Timothy Olyphant) and a group of tactical troops, Wendy must find her way through the wilderness while avoiding encounters with the Xenomorph threat and any potential hybrid offspring it may produce.
According to the official tagline for Alien: Earth, “When an enigmatic spaceship crash-lands on our planet, a young woman and a motley team of tactical soldiers stumble upon a chilling revelation that pits them against Earth’s most formidable danger.” Prior to its release in March, eager fans were given a glimpse into the cosmic terror ahead through a suspenseful promotional video. In this preview, viewers catch glimpses of both the mysterious spacecraft, as well as some of the crew members who met their unfortunate end during the ship’s final voyage.
Alien: Earth is set to premiere on FX and Hulu on August 12.
