As a long-time fan of the Alien franchise, I must admit that the prospect of Earth becoming the new hunting ground for Xenomorphs in the upcoming FX drama, Alien: Earth, has me both exhilarated and petrified! The idea of these terrifying creatures stalking the streets of our own planet is a chilling thought.
If the imposing and menacing Xenomorphs that haunted Cailee Spaeny in the expanse of Alien: Romulus in space left you feeling fearful, imagine how unsettling it would be if the next chapter of the series reveals these aliens might invade your own neighborhood.
For the first time in the film series history, the Xenomorphs are earthbound in the upcoming FX television drama Alien: Earth from Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley. During this year’s Emmys ceremony, Hawley chatted with Deadline about what viewers will see in the upcoming sci-fi horror show.
There’s been some questioning about creating an “Alien” narrative on Earth. A big part of what makes the films so scary is the cosmic dread of space isolation: feeling stranded somewhere unfamiliar in terrain that isn’t designed for us, transforming into prey for a top predator from another world. But how would this concept play out if Xenomorphs are the main characters of a more realistic Earth-bound storyline?
Hawley expresses assurance that “Alien: Earth” will evoke the same terror as its predecessors, noting that encountering a Xenomorph in Earth’s wilderness firsthand will leave an impression. Indeed, it represents a unique take on the series launched by the 1979 film directed by Ridley Scott. This shift could potentially bring a fresh, invigorating twist to the franchise as it ventures into uncharted territory.
That is truly chilling to think of it moving here among us, and so I can’t tell you under what circumstances you’ll see that, but you’ll see it — and you’re going to lock your door that night.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my excitement over the sneak peek we got of the “Alien: Earth” EP. Although it didn’t reveal much about the series itself, it certainly tantalized us with hints about the Xenomorph’s design. Interestingly, he mentioned that he chose to preserve the creature’s overall aesthetic, considering its silhouette as almost sacred. However, he did tinker with the design to guarantee that it would be as terrifying as we’ve come to expect from this iconic creature.
This show narrates the story of a character portrayed by Sydney Chandler, known from ‘Don’t Worry Darling’, as she, along with a team of soldiers, stumble upon an extraterrestrial spaceship that has crashed onto our planet. As they delve into the mystery, they encounter one of the most dangerous alien creatures in existence. ‘Alien: Earth’ is a prequel series set 30 years prior to the events depicted in ‘Alien’.
A teaser for Alien: Earth was released in front of select screenings of Alien: Romulus.
The show is scheduled for release sometime in 2025 across multiple platforms. It will air on FX, be available for streaming on Hulu, and can be accessed internationally through Disney+ and Star.
