Alien: Earth debuts first teaser and plot details ahead of summer 2025 release window
As a longtime fan of the Alien franchise, I have to admit that I’m feeling a mix of excitement and trepidation about the upcoming series, Alien: Earth. On one hand, Noah Hawley has shown an incredible knack for storytelling with his work on Fargo, so I’m eager to see what he can bring to this iconic universe. On the other hand, the idea of a Xenomorph on Earth before the events of the original movie just seems…wrong.
Instead of reprising the Xenomorph on the big screen this summer with “Alien: Romulus”, fans will be introduced to a completely different take on the Alien franchise next year. Titled “Alien: Earth”, this upcoming project hails from the creator of “Fargo”, Noah Hawley, and is set before the original film, you’ve got it – right here on Earth. This new approach has piqued the interest of many Alien series enthusiasts, as they wonder how “Alien: Earth” will spin this familiar tale. We’ve now learned a bit more about the production details, along with its release date: Alien: Earth is scheduled to debut in summer 2025 on Hulu.
Today, we’ve got a fresh sneak peek that goes by the slogan, “In the year 2120, Mother Earth is due.” Take a look at it right up there.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some fresh scoops about the upcoming “Alien: Earth” series! Contrary to earlier speculations, it appears that this series is now slated for the year 2120, just two years prior to the original “Alien” movie featuring Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley. This placement in the timeline is significantly closer to the first film than previously suggested, suggesting a more direct prequel role for “Alien: Earth”.
In an unexpected event, a strange spaceship collides on our planet. A youthful woman and an assorted team of tactical soldiers stumble upon a startling revelation that positions them against Earth’s most formidable danger,” writes Deadline. “As the crash investigation team looks for survivors amidst the wreckage, they come across terrifying predatory creatures beyond their nightmares. With this hidden threat now exposed, the investigation team must battle to stay alive. The decisions they make regarding this discovery could transform planet Earth in ways they never anticipated.
The sci-fi drama Alien: Earth features Sydney Chandler as the main character, alongside Alex Lawther, Timothy Olyphant, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, David Rysdahl, Adrian Edmondson, Adarsh Gourav, Jonathan Ajayi, Erana James, Lily Newmark, Diem Camille, and Moe Bar-El.
Hawley further discussed the upcoming features for viewers in September when he conversed with Deadline during the Emmys. “Imagining a Xenomorph roaming freely on Earth is spine-tingling. The thought of it moving among us is terrifying, and I can’t reveal the specifics, but rest assured, you will witness it – and you might want to secure your home that night.
Alien: Earth sounds like it ruins the entire point of the first Alien movie, and I’m very nervous about it
So those are the details we now have about Alien: Earth. Generally, I try to give the benefit of the doubt to new entries in my favorite franchises; I’ve enjoyed Alien movies for years, even the ones which are widely considered stinkers. But Alien: Earth has always seemed like it was set in a fairly weird spot in the mythos, because it takes place before the first Alien movie…yet features a Xenomorph on the planet Earth. So far, only the much-maligned Alien vs. Predator movies have shown Xenomorphs on Earth, and we try not to talk about them. At the very least, they feel like a disconnected “what if” side story rather than a part of the solo Alien franchise.
As an ardent fan, I can’t help but express my thoughts on the unusual direction the Alien franchise is taking in its potential television series. A significant part of the Alien saga’s captivating narrative revolves around the desperate efforts to prevent the Xenomorph from reaching Earth, as its arrival would undoubtedly spell doom for humanity. This theme was consistently emphasized throughout the original four films, with corporate greed often driving characters to bring the deadly alien back for their own selfish ends.
As a passionate film buff, I can hardly contain my excitement about “Alien: Earth,” a prequel that promises to shed light on how the enigmatic Weyland-Yutani Corporation stumbled upon the terrifying Xenomorph species. In Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking 1979 masterpiece, it is hinted that Weyland-Yutani was already aware of the lethal alien vessel on LV 426 and deliberately dispatched Ripley’s crew to retrieve it. The film’s android antagonist, Ash, was programmed to bring the Xenomorph back to Earth for the staggering profits it would bring to the company. However, “Alien” leaves us questioning how Weyland-Yutani first learned about the derelict spacecraft. Thus, “Alien: Earth” presents an opportunity to craft a compelling tale that fills in this narrative gap. Nevertheless, introducing a Xenomorph on Earth seems somewhat at odds with the established lore of the films, but upon closer inspection, it could potentially weave seamlessly into the existing storyline.
This aligns with Noah Hawley’s earlier comments that the storyline for “Alien: Earth” will deviate from the mythology Ridley Scott developed in “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant,” where the Xenomorphs were created by mysterious alien Engineers and the power-hungry android David. It’s worth noting that neither David nor any Xenomorphs he created ever reached Earth.
Perhaps the apprehensions are misplaced, and “Alien: Earth” could turn out fantastic. Given Hawley’s exceptional work on his popular show “Fargo”, there’s a glimmer of hope. However, for now, I must admit I am quite nervous. We’ll find out in the summer of 2025. Additionally, two new “Predator” movies are set to release next year, making it an action-packed period for enthusiasts of these renowned sci-fi horror series.
