Alexa Chung’s Battle with Endometriosis: Surgery, Frustration, and the Fight for Awareness

Alexa Chung recently shared that she had a surgical procedure due to endometriosis and talked candidly about her challenging journey with this health issue.

In July 2020, a 41-year-old fashion designer, host, and model received a diagnosis of endometriosis, a condition where uterine tissue grows outside the uterus in other parts of the body.

Currently, Alexa has openly acknowledged that dealing with this particular condition has been challenging and frustrating for her. Furthermore, she voiced concerns about the inadequate funding associated with it.

She shared that she had a laparoscopic procedure, during which the pelvic area was entered through tiny cuts, to remove damaged tissue as an attempt to alleviate her symptoms.

She shared with The Telegraph: “Years ago, I underwent a laparoscopy as part of an attempt to treat it. Unfortunately, there’s no definitive cure for endometriosis, but they often prefer to remove it surgically, just in case it might help.

I often find myself at a dead end, despite the fact that the doctors I’ve met have been incredibly helpful and remarkable. At some point, you understand that there’s a limit to the treatments they can provide.

I really find it exasperating. It’s a common issue among women’s health, unfortunately, that receives inadequate attention and research.

Ever since she was diagnosed, Alexa has dedicated herself to spreading knowledge about this condition that impacts approximately 10% of women.

She’s collaborating with the pre-owned clothing platform, Vinted, to present an exclusive collection of luxury items from her own closet. All earnings from this sale will be donated to Endometriosis UK.

Starting on May 4, 2025, a special sale that is accessible exclusively to Vinted members in the United Kingdom will debut for their wardrobes.

As a devoted enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that an array of stylish essentials from coveted labels such as Prada, JW Anderson, Khaite, Magda Butrym, and Galvan London will grace our collection. These brands are synonymous with timeless elegance and cutting-edge design, making them must-haves for fashion connoisseurs like myself.

Notable additions feature an embellished Miu Miu bralette, a rosy Gucci handbag, and a vibrant ’30s era silk gown in coral, which Alexa donned during Paris Fashion Week.

During the early stages of the pandemic, Alexa openly shared her challenging struggle with endometriosis, an ordeal that at times made her feel such intense pain she needed to attend meetings while reclined.

Following many years of discomfort, during the filming of her Netflix show Next in Fashion in Los Angeles, the model received a diagnosis related to her kidneys, which was initially suspected as a hemorrhagic cyst based on scan results.

Prior to learning about it, doctors needed to eliminate the possibility of ovarian cancer. Subsequently, the fashion icon recounted returning to set for filming alongside her co-star, Tan France, following her doctor’s visit.

After returning to work, Tan inquired about my doctor’s visit. I replied, ‘It could potentially be ovarian cancer,’ as Alexa explained.

In March 2020, Alexa implied that the scarcity of information regarding endometriosis might stem from a prejudice in healthcare services based on gender.

She posted on Instagram a picture of a tube advertisement displaying stats about the subject, which she decided to share.

She wrote: “Why aren’t they aware of it? Why can’t they find a cure for it? Is it possibly due to a prejudice in reproductive healthcare? Additionally, I suspect the long and dull term ‘endometriosis’ doesn’t make things easier.

Appreciation goes out to @allontheboard for bringing attention to a devastating illness that impacts approximately 10% of women, often taking an average of 7 years to identify.

I apologize if you’ve been affected by this, but if not, I am thrilled! And should you be a supporter, friend, or family member to someone going through this ‘invisible nightmare,’ I express my deep gratitude.

I consider myself fortunate as I recovered well following my surgery, yet I understand that this isn’t always the experience for others, and it might not remain so for me. Wishing comfort to those who are hurting, and gratitude to the medical professionals working tirelessly to alleviate their pain.

Individuals diagnosed with endometriosis typically experience severe menstrual cramps and pelvic discomfort at various points in their monthly cycle, and it may lead to a variety of additional issues such as infertility, digestive problems due to scarring, and urinary system complications. Additionally, this condition can cause fatigue and mental health concerns.

Even though it impacts individuals from adolescence up until middle adulthood, finding effective treatments and making an accurate diagnosis can be challenging due to limited options available.

These conditions lack a definitive remedy, and the existing treatments tend to carry substantial side effects that may impact fertility, among other things, due to their hormonal composition.
