Alex Rodriguez and ex-wife finally address Madonna affair claims 17 years after they split amid scandal

A recent documentary series about Alex Rodriguez revisits his highly publicized 2008 divorce from Cynthia Scurtis, including rumors of an affair with Madonna.

Just under three months after Scurtis and Rodriguez welcomed their daughter, Ella, rumors surfaced claiming Rodriguez was having an affair with Madonna, causing a crisis in their marriage.

The baseball star quickly dismissed the rumors, and so did Madonna, who was still married to Guy Ritchie at the time.

However, Scurtis quickly filed for divorce, claiming her husband had been unfaithful and engaged in other inappropriate behavior, which only intensified the rumors.

In the recent episode of HBO’s “Alex vs. A-Rod,” Scurtis suggested that Alex Rodriguez had an affair around the time their daughter, Ella, was born. The show displayed a 2008 New York Post headline referencing a rumored relationship between Rodriguez and Madonna.

Scurtis explained that they got divorced, but during the show, neither she nor Rodriguez ever mentioned Madonna as the reason for their split.

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Madonna, Rodriguez and Ritchie for comment.

By 2002, Rodriguez was an established baseball star when he married Scurtis. They later had two daughters: Natasha, born in 2004, and Ella, born in 2008.

In May 2007, Rodriguez was seen at a Toronto strip club with an unidentified woman, which caused a public scandal for his relationship.

Scurtis described him as deeply sorry and ashamed of what he had done, while talking about the scandal in the new documentary series.

She recalled a comparable situation happening when her daughter Ella was born, and at the same time, a New York Post headline about her and Madonna was displayed on the screen.

In the documentary series, Rodriguez didn’t directly admit to having affairs, but he did say he hadn’t always been fully faithful to his former wife.

Looking back, I realize he really wished he’d been a better husband. He often said he could have been so much more present in the relationship, and he regretted not being more understanding and compassionate – honestly, he felt like he could have done anything to be a better partner.

Scurtis filed for divorce in July 2008, shortly after reports surfaced about Rodriguez supposedly having a romantic relationship with the singer known for the song ‘Express Yourself’.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen relationships crumble for all sorts of reasons, and in this case, things got really messy. Apparently, Scurtis’ lawyer claimed that Madonna and Rodriguez weren’t having a traditional affair – they framed it more as an emotional connection, an ‘affair of the heart,’ if you will. But regardless of the specifics, this connection was reportedly the final push that led his client to end things, according to People magazine.

In her divorce papers, Scurtis said the marriage had failed because of her husband’s infidelity and inappropriate behavior.

Rodriguez firmly stated that his relationship with Madonna was purely a friendship. He told People magazine, ‘We’re friends. That’s it.’

Okay, so Madonna totally shut down all those ridiculous rumors about her and Guy Ritchie! She said absolutely nothing was going on between them, and honestly, it drove me crazy that people even suggested she made him get into Kabbalah. Like, she’s been studying it since the ’90s – it’s a huge part of her life, not something she just foists on people! It just felt like another way to try and tear her down, and I was so glad she defended herself.

The singer stated firmly that they are not involved in his marital issues or his personal spiritual beliefs.

According to a friend, Rodriguez told them he was deeply in love with Madonna, even calling her his “soulmate,” as reported by Us Weekly.

On the new HBO show, Scurtis shared that she was aware the person in question was struggling with personal issues and expressed a desire for him to seek help, hoping for a more positive outcome.

She remembered Rodriguez being very distressed about their divorce, which naturally impacted her. However, she also felt a surprising sense of relief and liberation at the same time.

Rodriguez recalled a striking coincidence: he hit a home run on the very same day he and his wife filed for divorce.

The Yankees icon shared that playing baseball felt like an escape, allowing him to be his best self, at least while he was on the field.

Madonna and Ritchie revealed they were separating in October 2008, just three months after Scurtis began divorce proceedings from Rodriguez.
