Alex Garland Sets Next A24 Movie With House Of The Dragon Star As Director

A frequent collaborator with A24 is taking on a new role: producer. The studio announced that Alex Garland will produce Stages, an upcoming film from Film4 and A24. The movie will mark the directorial debut of actress Sonoya Mizuno, and is reportedly inspired by her experiences as a dancer. Details about the plot are currently limited.

Originally a ballet dancer trained at the Royal Ballet School in London, Mizuno now shines as an actress in film and television. She first appeared on screen in Garland’s film Ex Machina, and has since starred in popular projects like Crazy Rich Asians, Annihilation, La La Land, and House of the Dragon.

Alex Garland has directed several successful films for A24, including his recent releases, Warfare and Civil War. With his next horror sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, slated for Sony Pictures, it’s expected he’ll continue working with A24, starting with the film Stages and potentially on other projects in the future.

Alex Garland and Sonoya Mizuno have worked together on multiple projects, including the Hulu series Devs, where Mizuno starred and Garland was the creator. In a 2020 interview with Deadline, Mizuno described Garland as being very open to collaboration, saying it felt like a truly equal partnership. Now, that collaborative spirit is expanding, as Mizuno steps into the role of director.

Alongside Garland’s role as producer, Peter Rice (known for Warfare and 28 Years Later), along with Myles Payne and Sam Ritzenberg of Agile Films (Femme), are also producing Stages. While Garland might be exploring a new style of film, he’s collaborating with familiar colleagues, aiming to create another successful A24 drama.

I’m really excited to see Sonoya Mizuno back as Mysaria in House of the Dragon season 3! We’ll get another glimpse of her character – who’s become a seriously powerful advisor to Queen Rhaenyra, played by Emma D’Arcy – as the battle for the Iron Throne heats up. Luckily, we won’t have to wait too long, as season 3 is slated for release sometime next year, right after the premiere of the other Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, in January.
