In simple terms, a judge in New Mexico has thrown out Alec Baldwin’s lawsuit claiming he was wrongfully accused. This decision comes about a year after the actor-producer was found not guilty in the criminal case involving the fatal shooting on the set of “Rust” that took the life of the film’s cinematographer.
In a lawsuit filed in January, Baldwin contended that aggressive investigators and prosecutors from New Mexico targeted him unfairly, portraying him as the fall guy for the unfortunate incident where Halyna Hutchins, the film director of photography, was accidentally shot on set.
Six months following the dismissal of the involuntary manslaughter accusation against him, Baldwin found himself involved in a lawsuit.
Previously serving as the Judge of the 1st Judicial District Court in New Mexico, Mary Marlowe Sommer halted the trial involving Alec Baldwin in July, due to the revelation that the prosecution had failed to share pertinent evidence with Baldwin’s defense team.
In the following legal action, Baldwin specifically named Special Prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey, District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies of the 1st Judicial District, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies, and members of the Santa Fe County Commissioners as his subjects of interest.

In the Baldwin involuntary manslaughter case, the judge dropped the criminal charge upon finding out about a suspected attempt to hide possible evidence from view.
The defendants were accused in the lawsuit of being overly eager to convict Alec Baldwin, motivated by ill-conceived reasons, and willing to do so regardless of the cost.
On Tuesday, a new judge ruled out Baldwin’s allegations against the state, stating that there hadn’t been enough action on the case.
Six months have passed without any substantial developments in Baldwin’s case, as stated by Judge Casey B. Fitch. He has granted the attorneys 30 days to submit a motion to ensure the legal proceedings continue.
The ruling comes as legal proceedings in the “Rust” shooting saga are winding down.
In May, weapons specialist Hannah Gutierrez completed her 14-month prison sentence for the involuntary manslaughter charge she received following the death of Hutchins in October 2021 on a film set in New Mexico.

In my perspective, after serving 14 long, arduous months behind bars, Gutierrez found herself incarcerated due to her conviction in the tragic 2021 incident that took the life of renowned cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
A little over a year ago, the court case against Baldwin was dropped by Judge Marlowe Sommer during the third day of his well-known trial. Since then, she’s chosen to retire.
In my perspective as a movie buff, I’d say: Rather than me admitting guilt, my legal team brought up some compelling doubts about the way the evidence was managed by New Mexico police officers and district attorneys during the course of their investigation against me.
In March 2024, Baldwin’s legal team alleged misconduct by the state, citing an unreviewed set of bullets that a potential witness had handed to investigators from the sheriff’s office. Marlowe Sommer, who was handling the case, seemed enraged at the mishandling of the evidence and consequently dropped the sole charge against Baldwin, claiming it was unfairly withheld from the defense.
Previously this year, shortly after Baldwin’s lawsuit was initiated, Morrissey stated that the prosecutors were previously informed about Baldwin’s intention to sue New Mexico. Furthermore, she expressed anticipation for their opportunity to present their case in a court of law.
