In 2024, Tim Burton unveiled “Beetlejuice 2,” but neither Alec Baldwin nor Geena Davis reprised their roles from the highly anticipated sequel to the original movie released in 1988. The original film revolved around a couple named Adam (Baldwin) and Barbara (Davis), who perished in an accident and found themselves stuck as ghosts in their cherished home. However, when a new family moved in and began transforming the house beyond recognition, they enlisted the help of a mischievous poltergeist named Betelgeuse to scare them away. Unfortunately, they underestimated the chaotic presence that Betelgeuse brought with him.

In 2024, Burton revisited the Beetlejuice series. Most of the family who moved into the house remained, with the exception of Jeffrey Jones’ character, the dad. Interestingly, Adam and Barbara, previously present ghosts, were noticeably absent in this sequel. The storyline shifted to introduce new characters such as Lydia’s daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) and a new antagonist – Betelgeuse’s ex-wife, played by Monica Bellucci. However, the sequel left some unanswered questions regarding the fate of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis’ characters.

Tim Burton Wanted To Explore A Different Story

The character of Beetlejuice, played again by Michael Keaton, as well as Lydia (Winona Ryder) and Delia (Catherine O’Hara), all made a comeback in the new movie. However, notable absences were Adam (originally portrayed by Alec Baldwin) and Barbara (Geena Davis), the two main ghosts from the first film. This sparked curiosity as to why these spirits attached to their cherished home were missing when the second installment arrived. Director Tim Burton expressed that he had moved on from their narrative.

It seemed that for me, checking off boxes wasn’t enough. Despite their significant role in the initial project, I found myself concentrating on other aspects instead.

This sequel clearly revolves around the passage of time. The interplay between a mother, her daughter, and granddaughter hooked me. These three generations form the core of the story. I wouldn’t have been able to create this narrative back in 1989 or whenever it was originally written.

As a movie enthusiast, I found Tim Burton’s challenge in balancing costs and maintaining practical effects for the Beetlejuice sequel quite intriguing. The character of Betelgeuse, hidden under layers of makeup, posed no issue. However, Adam and Barbara, appearing as human-like ghosts, presented a unique conundrum. Since Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis wouldn’t age like their characters in the supernatural world, as they do in reality, digitally de-aging them seemed like an arduous task. Unfortunately, this complexity made it difficult to keep these beloved characters integrated into the film.

Adam & Barbara Found A Loophole

It can’t be a Beetlejuice sequel unless we understand why Adam and Barbara’s ghosts are no longer in their home. In the original movie, they wanted to live undisturbed as spirits in their house, annoyed that a new family was planning to move in and renovate. Since Lydia left years ago, it’s puzzling why the ghosts would leave when they finally had the place all to themselves. Given that they were bound to stay for 125 years, it seems unlikely that they could have vacated voluntarily.

The sequence of events was made clear in the movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice“. Lydia comprehended the situation, and she stated that Adam and Barbara discovered a way out in their agreement, enabling them to ultimately “pass on.” This not only led to the departure of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis but also provided Tim Burton an opportunity to expand his film’s narrative as Lydia can no longer validate the existence of ghosts to Astrid due to their absence.

It’s uncertain whether Adam and Barbara have ventured into the afterlife or can now roam the earth as spirits. Yet, in a subtle manner, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hinted at their presence without necessitating Adam Baldwin or Geena Davis to appear. In the diorama in the attic, there are miniature figures of Adam and Barbara stretching towards the heavens from the model town, a clever nod, and a subtle tribute to these cherished characters.
