Alec Baldwin: Why I Still Love the Original Beetlejuice Over the Sequel
In the initial “Beetlejuice” movie, Alec Baldwin played a significant role, yet he wasn’t part of the cast in last year’s sequel. Interestingly, he did catch the sequel and expressed his opinions, admitting that he still finds the original film more appealing compared to its follow-up.
In a recent interview for the One Bad Movie podcast, hosted by his brother Stephen Baldwin, Alec Baldwin talked about Beetlejuice. He mentioned that he watched the sequel in cinemas twice because his children had only seen snippets of the initial film where he starred. Baldwin further expressed that the sequel appears more somber compared to the innocent feel of the original movie, and he wasn’t pleased with director Tim Burton for casting Monica Bellucci as a dark-makeup-wearing, stitched ghoul named Delores—the former spouse of Betelgeuse (played by Michael Keaton). This character was made to look inconceivably beautiful.
Baldwin expressed that he found the original Beetlejuice movie more endearing, stating it was far more innocent. He went on to say that the current Beetlejuice film is quite dark, with an abundance of special effects. Regarding Monica Bellucci, he noted her as an exceptionally beautiful actress in films, and now she’s working alongside Tim Burton. In the new film, Burton transforms Bellucci into Wednesday Addams, where she dons black attire and has facial stitches. Baldwin commented that here’s one of the world’s most beautiful women, and Burton has essentially turned her into his version of Debbie Scissorhands or similar character.
It’s important to note that Baldwin didn’t dislike Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Instead, he highlighted the aspects of the sequel that he admired, primarily the performances delivered by its returning stars, such as Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara.
He remarked, “However, I had believed there were appealing aspects [regarding ‘Beetlejuice’],” he stated. “I’m a big fan of Keaton; he’s terrific. He was entertaining then, and he still is now. Then, there’s Winona, who hasn’t changed her appearance. Oh, Winona is stunningly beautiful, captivating, and talented. She excels at playing roles like this. It’s as if Geena [Davis] couldn’t even act when we filmed together, but in the movie, she subtly added touches with her eyes or expressions to avoid competing with the special effects and makeup, and instead, play it intelligently… And Catherine O’Hara, whom I adore, is hilarious.
There’s a Third Beetlejuice Movie in the Works
Due to the triumph of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, it appears a third film is under development. Potentially titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice“, this information comes with a note of caution, as it’s uncertain if Michael Keaton (Baldwin) and Geena Davis would reprise their roles for the third movie after both were missing in the second part. Davis has previously explained why her and Baldwin’s absence from the sequels was sensible, considering that the actors have noticeably aged, while their characters wouldn’t show any signs of aging.
Davis clarified, “Were you under the impression that I would be appearing in ‘Beetlejuice Beelejuice’? Well, let me tell you, my guess is that ghosts don’t grow older… And as for myself, I haven’t. Since our characters remain frozen in time at their death, it’s been quite a while since we last saw each other.
