Alastair Stewart shares emotional health update amid dementia battle

As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating virtual worlds, I find myself drawn to Alastair Stewart‘s real-life journey. The newsreader’s bravery in sharing his vascular dementia diagnosis and his honesty about the challenges he faces are truly inspiring.

Alastair Stewart recently posted an update about his health, following his announcement last year that he had been diagnosed with vascular dementia.

Today, on BBC Breakfast (October 9), the ex-ITV news anchor and his partner Sally made an appearance, where he shared insights about coping with an early-onset health issue.

“My professional life is okay, I still do a bit for GB News, they’re very supportive,” he said.

He mentioned that his personal life and home situation are quite disorganized, so this morning, even when coming to see you, [Sally] had to help him with his tie, ensure his suit’s accessories were in order, and make sure everything looked coordinated.

It’s not just confusing, but it feels degrading for both of us. After decades of being partners in marriage, she finds herself in the role of a caregiver.

Sally confessed that assisting her spouse has proven to be quite challenging, yet they’ve discovered moments of amusement as they navigate through his illness.

As a gamer, let me tell you, this journey isn’t a walk in the park. It’s challenging, it’s aggravating at times, and yes, it can be downright disheartening. But hey, we find ways to laugh about it all! You don’t get handed a manual on how to conquer these virtual worlds; you just dive in and figure things out along the way!

Additionally, she shared that her concerns for her life partner surfaced two years ago as she began observing unusual behaviors around the house.

She mentioned that leaving the lights on, although it may seem insignificant, is a problem for someone who is very particular about turning them off.

“He couldn’t tell the time on a clock; he couldn’t reset the clock. He was getting confused with days, leaving doors open, leaving gates open, little tiny changes but it was a concern.”

When host Jon Kay noted that Stewart appeared “as articulate and composed as always,” the reporter responded by finding it “quite an unusual juxtaposition.

He agreed, echoing Sally’s wise words, “‘Just move forward,'” he added, implying that action is necessary.

Stewart additionally expressed his wish to aid others by disclosing his diagnosis and daily experiences.

He advised, “If you’re concerned about your health and find it difficult to read an antique clock or tie your shoelaces, don’t hesitate to consult with your general practitioner. We’ve had a fantastic experience with our GP, the NHS has taken excellent care of us.

You can find comprehensive details about dementia through various organizations such as the NHS, Dementia UK, and in the U.S., the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
