Alan Tudyk wanted K-2SO to have a different storyline in ‘Andor’

In the second season of the show “Andor,” Alan Tudyk made a short appearance once more as K-2SO, a role he first played in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” This time around, however, his character’s dynamic with Captain Cassian Andor was delved into less than fans might have hoped.

In the movie Rogue One, the friendship between Cassian and K-2 was a standout feature. However, Andor has unveiled that these two characters didn’t actually meet until a year before the film’s events, and their initial encounter was marked by tension rather than the amicable dynamic portrayed in Rogue One. After K-2 underwent reprogramming, he appeared affectionate towards Cassian, but Cassian himself seemed aloof, contrasting with their enjoyable banter from the earlier film. It appears that the series omitted significant details about the development and strengthening of their relationship, leaving fans curious as to how they came to form such a close bond.

Alan Tudyk expresses his desire for the show to explore how his character, K-2, dealt with the traumatic actions he was ordered to carry out for the Empire. In an interview with Gold Derby, Tudyk shared that it would have been fascinating to delve into K-2’s potential PTSD and the need for someone to help him reconcile with his identity. He mentioned that he would have enjoyed portraying this aspect of K-2’s character development because by the time we meet him in Rogue One, he and Cassian had formed a strong bond.

In the show ‘The Mandalorian’, it’s intriguing to consider if a robot like K-2 could suffer from PTSD, given his Imperial past. However, determining whether he retains memories of his deeds for the Empire post reprogramming is challenging. On the other hand, in the same series, IG-11 – an assassin droid formerly linked to the bounty hunters’ guild – underwent a memory wipe at the hands of Kuiil, the Ugnaught. Although he couldn’t recall his past actions, his disposition noticeably transformed post reprogramming.

In the storyline, K-2SO developed a strong bond with Cassian, almost like an inseparable pair. It would’ve been delightful to explore more of their shared adventures together. Interestingly, it seems Alan Tudyk’s character was intended to have a larger role in Andor, but this expanded part got scaled back. This potential reduction might have taken away the engaging back-and-forth between K-2 and Captain Andor, a beloved aspect of Rogue One.

If you missed the banter between K-2SO and Cassian Andor in Rogue One, you can catch up by rewatching the film. Alan Tudyk’s portrayal of the sarcastic droid adds a lighter touch to some of the more tense moments in the movie, with his witty, straightforward, and humorous dialogue.

This version preserves the original meaning while making it easier for readers to understand and enjoy the sentence. It also includes a few additional details that help to further clarify and enhance the description of Tudyk’s performance.

Andor is streaming on Disney+.
