Alan Ritchson reveals why his Hunger Games death left him looking “like an idiot”

In the 2013 sequel, the character played by Reacher was Gloss, a resident of District 1 and previous winner of the Hunger Games who was drafted to participate in the Third Quarter Quell alongside his sister, Cashmere (Stephanie Leigh Schlund).

Initially, it was intended for Ritchson’s character to be struck by Jennifer Lawrence’s arrow in the face, but instead, he was killed after being hit in the chest with an arrow on set, as later disclosed by Ritchson himself.

During a recent interview with WIRED, he said, “I got hit by an arrow right in the face. I handled that situation as if I’d been hit directly there.

Initially, it seemed like Katniss would pierce me with an arrow right in the face, but after reconsideration, they found that scene a bit excessive. So, they adjusted it to show her shooting me instead, right in the chest.

However, I didn’t act as if I was getting shot point-blank. Instead, my reaction seemed unnatural, and something entered my body, leaving me in this state. Who behaves like that? I wouldn’t have met such a fate.

The Hunger Games movie series started with the first film, The Hunger Games, released in 2012. After that, there were three more installments: Catching Fire in 2013, followed by Mockingjay Part 1 and Mockingjay Part 2, which hit the screens in 2014 and 2015 respectively, based on Suzanne Collins’ book series.

In the year 2023, a film named “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” hit the screens, narrating the tale of a youthful character named Coriolanus Snow.

Another prequel film called “Sunrise on the Reaping” is being developed, focusing on a younger version of Haymitch Abernathy who is selected to participate in the 50th Hunger Games, often referred to as the Second Quarter Quell.

Sunrise on the Reaping will arrive in cinemas on November 20, 2026.
