Alan Ritchson‘s career started with a memorable moment – a striptease on American Idol – and he’s been anything but typical ever since. After appearing in shows like Smallville and Blue Mountain State, he became a familiar face when he landed the lead role in Prime Video’s Reacher. Since then, things have been incredibly busy, with both highs and lows. As filming wraps on Season 4, expected in 2026, Ritchson is recognizing the need to slow down and prioritize his well-being by learning to say no to new projects.
Alan Ritchson didn’t come from a Hollywood family and grew up far from the entertainment industry, so he probably never imagined becoming a major celebrity. He recently told Collider about the instability he faced as a teenager and how those difficult experiences ultimately helped him develop resilience and strength he could later rely on. He explained it this way:
I didn’t have much growing up, and I started running away from home at sixteen. For a long time, I lived in my truck parked behind a grocery store. Eventually, at eighteen, I moved into public housing. I’ve always felt a strong need to learn through my own experiences. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life, but I knew I needed to escape my current situation. Coming from a difficult background like mine, you develop a real toughness and a willingness to do whatever it takes to get by.
Many people can understand what Ritchson went through, particularly those who grew up without much money. When you’ve gone without luxuries for a long time, it’s easy to say yes to anything if it means a reward. For Ritchson, achieving success as an actor led to a flood of project offers, and his ingrained habit of accepting everything likely made it hard to refuse any work. He explained further:
Lately, I’ve realized I used to say ‘yes’ to absolutely everything, trying to juggle it all. But I’m at a point in my career where that’s actually become a problem. I’m starting to understand that the quality of my work is paramount now. Each project and each filmmaker I collaborate with really matters, so I need to be much more discerning and careful about what I take on. It’s not about being greedy; it’s about protecting the integrity of what I do.
While the timing is likely not accidental, what’s more important is that Alan Ritchson clearly feels strongly about making good work. It’s interesting he’s emphasizing quality so soon after his new show with Kevin James received very negative reviews. Despite the show’s overall reception, Ritchson was a standout performer – he’s naturally funny, even if his co-star didn’t always seem to recognize it.
Ritchson has three more action films coming up, each with a different style. He’ll be starring in Adam Shankman’s funny Christmas movie, The Man with the Bag, Patrick Hughes’ science fiction film, War Machine, and Scott Waugh’s thriller, Runner. He recently shared a picture from Runner showing him covered in blood – it’s no guarantee the movie will be good, but it certainly looks promising!
However, Jack Ritchson, who stars alongside the cast of Fast X, isn’t choosing projects solely based on their quality or how they might impact his career. His incredibly busy schedule has also affected his personal life and family. He shared that he and his wife had to change their lifestyle to better accommodate their children, meaning they’ve had to spend more time apart than they used to, rather than always being together.
We homeschooled our children for many years. But as my oldest approached thirteen, they began to desire a more typical school experience with friends and a stable community. What we initially thought was a positive, travel-filled lifestyle eventually led to resentment, both towards the lifestyle and towards me. Now, they’ve moved away, and I rarely get to see them – it’s like things have completely flipped.
He prioritizes spending weekends with friends and family, but he doesn’t think he’ll be able to keep up that pace long-term. Because of this, he’s decided to slow down and finally take a break – his first in almost three years.
If Alan Ritchson wants a break, he might want to stop discussing potential roles in the DC Universe, like Batman, because those franchises can be incredibly demanding. However, I really hope he does get the chance to play Batman… it’s a tough situation!
