Al Roker’s Awkward Live TV Moment After Jenna Bush Hager’s Shocking Kiss Claim
On NBC’s The Today Show, things have been lively as the 2025 broadcast schedule continues. For example, earlier in the year, beloved panelist Hoda Kotb hosted her farewell show. More recently, Jenna Bush Hager has alleged that Al Roker had a past romantic encounter with her grandmother, which he was surprised to hear when she mentioned it during a live broadcast. However, Bush Hager quickly corrected herself and clarified the statement.
The blunder took place during the June 10th episode of Today, following Al Roker’s popular trip to Epic Universe and within the daily Morning Boost segment presented by Bush Hager. In this segment, Bush Hager showcased a notable event about her paternal grandmother, Barbara Bush, who received a special stamp in recognition. At this point, JBH inadvertently asked her colleague if he recalled kissing his grandmother. However, upon noticing the dismay on her co-anchor’s face, she soon understood that it was actually weatherman Willard Scott who kissed her grandma. When addressing the situation (via People), Roker responded:
The situation was incredibly uncomfortable from multiple angles; it seemed as if I might have even kissed her grandmother.
It’s quite astonishing to witness an unexpected turn of events! You might recall that Bush Hager once mentioned Willard Scott getting a quick kiss on the lips from the former first lady during a 1989 inaugural parade. Watching this misunderstanding unfold is certainly thrilling. Fortunately, Bush Hager swiftly corrected the misconception. Live TV can indeed be unpredictable, and this instance is a clear example of that!
Undeniably, there’s no mistaking Al Roker’s charm and quick wit on television. It’s hardly shocking then, that in the face of an awkward moment, he managed to respond with a playful quip about not sharing a kiss with Barbara Bush.
Not that I wouldn’t have!
Today continues to be an engaging and thrilling program to watch, filled with unexpected twists and turns. It’s amazing how Bush Hager steered the discussion towards that kiss – it was certainly an unforeseen direction! What I adore even more, however, is when the wrongly accused Roker humorously referenced that joke earlier! Bravo to him for taking the mistake in stride and maintaining a good sport’s spirit.
As a movie critic looking back on Al Roker’s impressive career, it’s clear that this veteran broadcaster has mastered the art of handling the unexpected on live television. With nearly three decades under his belt at the renowned NBC morning show, I can only imagine the countless times he’s had to remain alert and quick-witted throughout his illustrious broadcasting journey.
More on Jenna Bush Hager

Jenna Bush Hager shares the one prohibited word NBC gave her on “Today”, and to be honest, I can’t imagine I could have held back.
As Jenna Bush Hager settles into her role following Hoda Kotb’s departure, she’s making a name for herself on the show, and there’s no pressure to fill in for the cherished former co-host right away. In her new segment, Jenna & Friends, Jenna shares the screen with a variety of celebrity guests. Meanwhile, Kotb has been keeping an eye on the newcomers and has some fantastic suggestions for permanent hosts, including actor and podcast host Matt Rogers who she thinks could be a great fit for her old position.
Currently, I can’t help but feel this kissing mishap will linger in my memory for a while. I sincerely hope that, given time, Al Roker and Jenna Bush Hager will find the same amusement in it as I do.
