Okay, so everyone’s talking about the recent layoffs at 2XKO, and yeah, it’s tough. But the team wants you to know – we’re still fully committed to the game! We’re pushing forward, and we’re planning to make it even bigger and better. Don’t worry, it’s not going anywhere!
League of Legends is adding two new playable characters, Akali and Senna, as part of the 2XKO project. Details are currently limited, and the characters are still under development.
The development team also shared their future plans, focusing on three key areas: playing with duos, improvements to the overall game, and better support for the player community.
Akali and Senna in 2XKO: Gameplay reveal
It’s exciting to hear that more characters are coming to 2XKO! With the game being a 2v2 tag-team fighter, the current selection of characters feels a bit small, so Akali and Senna are great additions to the lineup.
- Akali is a “ninja who cuts opponents down with deadly precision.” In the video, we can see her teleporting behind Darius and punishing his whiff. Akali proceeds with a series of attacks, including ninja spins and kunai hits.
- Senna “blasts enemies with a massive cannon, then rushes them down in her wraith form.” A huge weapon looks like th basis of Senna’s far-reaching and high-damaging normals. The specials include a beam blast. Senna gains enough energy and uses a long hitstun of Darius to transform into her shadow form, becoming quicker and probably more effective.
Local Duo Mode is in a prototyping phase
What really sets 2XKO apart for me is the duo play – you and a friend can both control one champion on a team. I remember watching SonicFox and INZEM absolutely crush it with this strategy, even in the mixed mode tournament at Frosty Faustings 2026. It’s a crazy cool way to play!
The next step for 2XKO Duos is a couch co-op — “together against the world.”
The concept is fantastic, but the developers haven’t given a clear timeframe for when it will be available. They’re still working on a local two-player mode, meaning it’s likely not coming to the game anytime soon.
High skill ceiling remains in 2XKO gameplay (but Yasuo and Ekko are gonna be nerfed)
News about the future of 2XKO came shortly after Riot Games announced layoffs. This timing led to conversations within the fighting game community about potential issues with how the game was made.
Beyond the disappointment of waiting for so long and a limited number of characters, players have also expressed concerns about the tag-team format and how difficult the game is to master.
So, I was chatting with Shaun Rivera, the game director for 2XKO, and he basically said the core gameplay isn’t going to change much. It’ll feel pretty familiar to anyone who’s played before!
2XKO is a game that rewards quick thinking and creative play, but it also offers a lot of strategic depth for players who want to master it. It’s a challenging game with a high skill ceiling, and it’s designed to stay that way, offering endless opportunities for improvement.

Players have identified Yasuo and Ekko as being too strong, and Riot acknowledges this. While they haven’t announced specific changes yet, the company hinted that these champions will likely be weakened in a future update, as their shortcomings aren’t obvious to top-level players.
These two characters are frequently ranked as top-tier in 2XKO tier lists, even appearing on lists created by prominent players like Bleed, the winner of Frosty Faustings 2026.
2XKO community support
Riot Games is moving forward with its planned esports schedule, where matches are decided by first to two knockouts, and is also increasing its support for smaller tournament organizers.
Basically, we want to help smaller tournament organizers grow and give players like me a reason to support our local gaming scenes. It’s all about building up the community and making it easier for everyone to get involved.
This announcement is just as significant as when new champions like Akali and Senna were released. Becoming a top-level player demands a lot of hard work, and competitors needed reassurance that the official 2XKO esports series would continue.
Immediately following an announcement from the game developers, Steve “Supernoon” Carbajal triumphed in a 2XKO tournament at GENESIS X3. He won playing Yasuo and Ekko – can you believe it?
Two major 2XKO esports events are scheduled back-to-back. The Texas Showdown 2026, for North American players, runs from March 27th to 29th. Shortly after, viennality XL will bring together top European competitors from March 28th to 29th.
