AJ Odudu wears a plunging gown while Jourdan Dunn looks chic in a black mini dress as they join Poppy Delevingne and Emma Weymouth at In Vogue documentary premiere
As I delve into this captivating narrative about the trailblazing Kate Moss, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of admiration for her journey. From a scrawny and shy teenager to an iconic supermodel who redefined beauty standards, she has truly come a long way.
On Monday evening, AJ Odudu attended the premiere of Disney’s In Vogue: The 90s alongside Jourdan Dunn, Poppy Delevingne, and Emma Weymouth.
During the recent London Fashion Week, a fresh documentary that began streaming last week, provides an inside perspective on the fashion world over the past ten years.
TV host AJ, aged 36, was stunningly beautiful in a bold, sunshine-yellow dress featuring a dramatic, low-cut neckline.
She paired a semi-transparent dress with a set of red PVC gloves, and styled her hair in a sleek, wet-appearing fashion.
34-year-old Jourdan selected a trendy mini dress featuring a high collar, which she matched with timeless black heels.
Poppy, 38, wore a check knee-length dress with a keyhole cut-out and heeled leather boots.
The model layered a grey trench coat over the top and pulled her hair back into a half-up half-down style.
The documentary features conversations with ex-editors of Vogue like Edward Enninful, along with notable figures such as supermodel Naomi Campbell, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, and Sarah Jessica Parker from Sex and the City.
Additionally, it touches upon Kate Moss’ ascent, detailing how she disrupted the modeling world in the early 90s through her “heroin chic” style, which was met with dissatisfaction by other models.
Originally, a 50-year-old woman hailing from Croydon faced criticism as she ascended to model stardom in her generation, with concerns among fellow top models that her rapid rise to fame might be limiting their own chances for success.
In the new Disney+ documentary, supermodel Tyra Banks discussed: ‘We were no longer receiving job offers.’
I recall standing backstage during a fashion show in New York City and overhearing some of the top models exclaiming, “Calvin [Klein] didn’t book any of us! Calvin didn’t book any of us.” Their expressions were filled with concern as they realized they hadn’t been selected for the show.
Notable models vented their frustration towards the latest arrival, while fashion designer John Galliano pointed out that Kate was often caught in the middle of accusations.
Kate stated, “I’m not naming anyone, but it was clear that there was a sense of ‘what’s going to happen next for us?’ among them.
During my initial exhibitions, I felt rather dwarfed by the grandeur of it all, being skinny and timid. However, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell warmly welcomed me, taking me under their care.
In a video clip filmed backstage in the ’90s, Linda Evangelista indirectly expressed her thoughts on the topic, without explicitly referring to Kate.
She said: ‘You have a hockey team, you don’t retire the whole team all at once, you bring in rookies one at a time, I mean it’s really nice to see these new girls’.
Although others might have had different opinions, it was initially Industry professionals who found Kate’s appearance less appealing, as they were hesitant about her ability to rival the statures of Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington, who were well-known for their taller, more curvaceous figures.
Kate shared in a recent Disney+ documentary that parents frequently approached her saying, “My child is struggling with anorexia.” This was incredibly difficult for her to hear.
My slender build was unexpected for some, as they were accustomed to seeing more curvaceous figures. If I had a more voluptuous physique, it may not have caused as much attention. Essentially, my body type was distinct from the models who preceded me.
The appearance gained prominence following the teenage model’s photoshoot in a lingerie spread for the June 1993 edition of Vogue.
During the photoshoot with Corinne Day, Ms. Moss remarked that she felt fantastic throughout the process. She found a sense of comfort and enjoyed crafting the images. To put it simply, it wasn’t fancy or high-end; instead, the shoot took place at her flat in London.
‘Our bedroom was like a bedsit. That’s the kind of fashion I liked. It was much simpler.’
As a lifestyle expert, I must confess that while I wholeheartedly appreciate Kate’s optimistic stance following our recent photoshoot, I can’t ignore the concerns raised by some viewers. They argue that the images might inadvertently promote unhealthy ideals and potentially trigger eating disorders like anorexia. It’s crucial for us to be mindful of these perspectives and strive to foster a healthier, more inclusive image standard.
Contemplating the response to the initial photograph (now housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in west London), fashion editor Catherine Kasterine shared in the documentary that ‘the audience was not yet prepared. They were utterly shocked.’
Straight away, the images were harshly criticized and heavily condemned. It seems now that we may have overlooked the fact that particular appearance was rather commonplace in our minds.
