Aimee Lou Wood’s sister Emily has revealed the heartbreaking reason they’ve parted ways.
The 31-year-old actress from The White Lotus has publicly discussed her personal struggles with issues like bulimia during her teenage years, a negative body image, social anxiety, and a recent ADHD diagnosis.
I was really interested to hear what make-up artist Emily had to say on the Breaking Beauty podcast this week. They asked her if she still does Aimee’s make-up, and she explained that she doesn’t anymore. It’s a tough situation, honestly, because both she and Aimee have dealt with mental health challenges for a long time, and they both agreed it was best to step back from that part of their working relationship. It’s good they’re prioritizing their well-being!
We’re naturally very aware of our surroundings and easily pick up on things. This can be especially intense at work, where how others see us feels much more pronounced.
Both Aimee and I have complex PTSD, which means we need a higher level of safety and security than most people to feel comfortable and secure.
I remember us working closely together, and I was probably a bit overbearing, constantly checking in on her. She just needed to focus on getting through each day.

‘It was just too much for us.’
Honestly, what she said really resonated with me. We all felt this strong need to protect what we had – our bond as women. It wasn’t about things going wrong, but more about setting healthy boundaries to keep that special connection thriving. It’s about respecting each other and making sure our sisterhood stays strong.
‘We needed to grow up and mature and it was actually the best thing we ever did.’
Emily used to do Aimee’s makeup regularly for work, but she recently made time for a one-time session for a special project.
I worked on Burberry’s campaign with her earlier this year. She made it clear that I was the right person for the job, and it was a great experience.
Aimee was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and grew up with Emily in Bramhall.
Their mother, charity worker Alison, is divorced from their father, car dealer Mike, 66.
Last month, Mike revealed in a candid interview that his past struggles with alcohol and cocaine caused significant pain and disruption for his daughters, Aimee and Emily, during their childhoods, and that they continue to deal with the emotional effects today.

Mike, celebrating 22 years of sobriety, shared that both of his daughters are neurodiverse. He believes they’ve inherited his creative side, as well as his tendency towards sensitivity and anxiety.
He explained that his previously wild and unstable life – marked by fights, excessive drinking, and a mental health crisis that required hospitalization – played a significant role in the mental health struggles his sisters have openly talked about.
Aimee says she first struggled with bulimia, body image issues, and intense social anxiety as a child, and these problems got worse when she became famous after appearing in Sex Education.
She admitted to still experiencing times of intense stress and feeling the urge to regain control by restricting her eating. However, she now recognizes these feelings and actively works to prevent burnout by reminding herself that she needs to eat.
Emily recently shared that she and Aimee, a former roommate from their time in London, are no longer living together. She explained that having her own space is important and she now lives with a close friend.
Aimee and Emily were a popular creative team before they decided to stop working together.
I’ve always been so impressed with Aimee’s style, and a huge part of that is down to Emily! She’s the one who created so many of Aimee’s iconic looks – I remember being absolutely stunned by her BAFTA Film Awards makeup in 2021, and she looked incredible at the TV BAFTAs too. Plus, Emily’s work on all those major fashion shoots is just breathtaking.
She also styled Aimee’s hair and makeup for the virtual premiere of Sex Education in 2021, which was held online because of Covid-19 restrictions.

As Aimee’s career took off – going from a popular Netflix actress to an Emmy-nominated star on The White Lotus – and her workload increased, their relationship became more challenging.
Mike recently shared that he’s incredibly thankful for the opportunity to rebuild his relationship with his daughters. He’s been through a difficult period marked by turmoil, abuse, and struggles with addiction, and now appreciates this fresh start.
He shared that his difficult history – including nightclub altercations, times in the hospital, a mental health crisis brought on by HIV fears, and a suicide attempt while traveling – directly influenced the creation of Aimee’s new BBC sitcom, Film Club, which focuses on a mother and her two daughters who struggle with anxiety.
Mike shared that he admires his daughters’ openness about their struggles with emotions. He believes this honesty can be inspiring to others.
He confessed that he wasn’t a good influence during his children’s early years and that he often caused trouble.
I may have been a negative role model for my kids in the past. Now that I’m sober, I hope I can set a better example and try to repair some of that damage.
Aimee has talked before about the impact her father’s behavior had on her. She’s described him as someone who loved to party and had a large ego, and that when she was growing up in Manchester, he spent a lot of time with famous people, like celebrities and footballers.
She credits years of therapy with helping her ‘unpick a lot’ of the trauma.
