Aimee Lou Wood ‘loved being the weight’ Rick had to carry in ‘The White Lotus’ finale
This article contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of “The White Lotus.”
She was merely a young woman confronting a man, pleading with him not to act recklessly. However, he disregarded her advice, and tragically, she wound up in a coffin.
As the Season 3 finale of “The White Lotus” came to an end, there were several deceased individuals: Rick (Walton Goggins) and Jim (Scott Glenn) lost their lives during the central gunfight. However, Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood), a carefree ex-yoga instructor known for her meme-worthy facial expressions, unfortunately met her demise as an unintended casualty amidst her boyfriend’s emotional turmoil.
The climax occurred after Rick’s hasty and poorly carried out plan to avenge his father’s death went awry. He intended to kill the man suspected of killing his father, Jim, who owned the White Lotus resort in Thailand with his wife Sritala, during a visit to their home in Bangkok. However, Rick didn’t go through with it. Upon returning to the resort, Jim arrived and confronted Rick, pulling out a gun and making offensive remarks about Rick’s mother. Despite trying to keep his anger in check, Rick later lost control when he saw Jim posing for photos with Jaclyn and her friends. He stormed over, grabbed Jim’s gun, and shot him. It was then that Sritala disclosed that Jim was actually Rick’s father.

Following eight installments, which included a two-hour finale, the third run of HBO’s witty dark series has concluded, sparking opinions from our team about the plot twists.
However, there isn’t a moment to absorb any of this as a firefight erupts with Jim’s security personnel, and Chelsea is struck by a bullet. Stricken with grief, Rick picks her up and flees the scene carrying her in his arms. In the chaos, Gaitok (Tayme Thapthimthong), finding courage from Sritala’s cries, fires at Rick from behind. Wounded, Rick falls into the water with Chelsea, their bodies submerged among the lily pads. Could this be Mike White’s dark take on “The Notebook” finale?
Chelsea, always having an interest in astrology, hinted at her impending misfortune by mentioning that trouble comes in threes after she had cheated death not once but twice – through the jewelry store robbery and the venomous snake bite. Unbeknownst to her, her words would prove prophetic.
I had the opportunity to sit down with actress Wood on a recent Monday. We delved into her character’s demise, the current state of affairs between Saxon, and the intriguing backstory that she and Goggins concocted about how Rick and Chelsea first crossed paths.

You’re alive!
It seems as though life has never felt more vibrant — each greeting I receive feels akin to the outpouring of love at a celebration of life. In essence, I feel as if I’ve been given a second chance.
As a passionate cinephile, I must confess, my heart is heavy today. The film I watched left me emotionally drained, to the point where I contemplated taking a day off, akin to mourning, just so I could fully process it. Yet, the thought of not being able to share this experience with you made that idea unbearable.
Today, I find myself needing to mourn; it’s such an unusual feeling. Last night was quite intense as we immediately followed a panel discussion with watching the event. This was my first time witnessing it. Patrick [Schwarzenegger] mentioned, “Seven months have passed and we’ve become like a family. We’ve just watched one of our own face such a tragic destiny, and it feels as if we need some time to comprehend it all.” I could easily use today, tomorrow, and possibly the day after to truly digest what I’ve just experienced – the culmination of a lengthy, complex, and deeply profound journey.
In keeping with typical American customs, it seems we’re asking for your contribution even beyond life. Allow me to express my sincere regrets about this situation. By now, I imagine you’ve already turned off your notifications. However, could you share with us the feedback you’re receiving from others?
Many people are deeply affected by the show’s events. I’ve been receiving numerous heartfelt messages, to the point where I find myself exclaiming, “But I’m still alive! You’re contacting me. We’re communicating. I’m here.” It feels quite personal because there’s a significant overlap between Aimee and Chelsea, as well as Walton and Rick. I understand why it’s so emotional. One thing that really caught my attention was someone suggesting, “Perhaps Chelsea could reappear in Season 4 as Saxon’s inner…” – did you notice that?

In the conclusion of Mike White’s HBO series, let’s clarify the key points: Who met an unfortunate end? Did Gaitok fire a shot? What became of the lorazepam? We’ve got you covered!
No, I haven’t, but I like where this is going.
Perhaps she could serve as his mentor figure, a guiding presence in his life. Essentially, what’s being implied here, and I believe it holds true, is that Saxon will embody the lessons Chelsea has imparted. In essence, Chelsea continues to live on; she lives on through everyone whose lives she has impacted.
When did you discover that Chelsea was going to be written off the show, Mike White? Was it during a conversation over piña coladas he shared this secret with you?
Man, that was quite amusing! Turns out the coconut milk spoiled, and watching it spill on the floor had me in stitches. I couldn’t stop laughing. It wasn’t a piña colada party invite, but rather during my callback. In my initial audition, I portrayed scenes where Chelsea told Rick to get a facial and mentioned he was a Scorpio. These snippets gave me a sense of their dynamic, hinting at a sort of sugar baby relationship.
When I received the callback, I got a new scene where Chelsea says, “I think we’re going to be together forever, don’t you?” and Rick replies, “That’s the plan.” This line made me feel uneasy, and performing it only intensified those feelings. Somehow, I just knew. Mike picked up on my intuition too, saying, “I think you kind of know,” to which I responded, “Yeah, I know.” He then hinted that my character would face a tragedy or die, suggesting perhaps I’d landed the role?
Did you really tell no one? Not even your mom. I feel like I would tell my mom.
The other day, my mom asked if it wasn’t me she was worrying about. I replied that she didn’t want to know because I wanted to keep a secret. Now, I’m questioning whether I should have warned her because she’s having a difficult time today. However, I didn’t tell anyone except for my best friend who accidentally found out when he saw some photos on the washing machine that I had left out. The pictures showed me lying on the ground covered in blood with Walton crying on top of me. He responded, “Goodness gracious, Aimee.

What did you think about how Chelsea met her fate?
At a personal level, I deeply regret that such an event occurred in Chelsea’s life. However, from a narrative perspective, it fits beautifully. She’s the one who steps towards peril, she doesn’t back down. When Rick shoots Jim, she doesn’t flee. Her vitality and her recklessness are both palpable and relentless.
he sees his pain and vengeance as his higher power, while she sees this relationship as hers. They are both neglecting personal responsibility and engaging in self-destructive behavior.

* What’s the story with the Ratliff family? Why must Rick make a trip to Bangkok? And who is the corpse floating in the water? Let me clarify some mysteries surrounding Mike White’s HBO series.
* What’s happening with the Ratliffs? Why does Rick have to travel to Bangkok? Who’s the body found in the water? I’ll shed light on some puzzling aspects of Mike White’s HBO show for you.
As a movie enthusiast, I find myself grappling with the complex dynamics between these characters. If I were her friend, I’d advise her, “Trying to mend a shattered soul isn’t wise; it might just leave you shattered too.” Yet, like a moth drawn to a flame, I can’t help but be captivated by their connection. The question lingering in my mind is: did Rick truly love Chelsea? What do you think?
Love, as we often perceive it, is not just an emotion, but an action, isn’t it? When we are less experienced, we tend to view it as a thing, like a noun. However, love is something you do, not just feel. I have no doubt that Rick has feelings for Chelsea, but he is not actively expressing his love towards her. As a result, she is not reaping the benefits of that love because he’s feeling it but not showing it. They both seem quite lonely in their relationship, each lost in their own thoughts. For a fleeting moment at breakfast, they connect fully when he says, “That’s the plan,” but that connection is quickly taken away. I find myself thinking, “If this were my friend…”, but Chelsea doesn’t have her friends with her. She has made it all about him and has lost sight of others. She is deeply engrossed in their relationship and seems to be unable to see anything else. Patrick expressed a wish that Saxon had sacrificed himself for Chelsea, as everyone wishes they could save her. However, she can only save herself. It’s challenging with Chelsea because she often diverts attention from the issue through spirituality and other philosophical discussions, which makes her appear wiser than she actually is.
“Speaking of Saxon, despite the fact that her character might have been a source of exasperation for many, she seems to have triggered something within him that altered his perspective or set him on a journey towards seeing things in a new light. What was it about their relationship that caught your interest?”
I find myself deeply drawn to both Chelsea and Saxon due to their unique traits. What captivates me is his attentiveness; he swiftly absorbs information and acts upon it promptly. For instance, when she suggests books, he reads them diligently, even finishing half of them at the beach before she’s done with the entire lot. This quick comprehension leaves Chelsea somewhat perplexed, as if she doesn’t quite know how to respond.
The scene takes on a vivid quality when Saxon discusses books with her, contrasting sharply with Rick who would likely dismiss such conversations. However, Chelsea seems drawn towards Rick, running to him at the beach instead. She yearns for the role of the observer rather than the observed, seeking to understand rather than be understood – a dynamic that Saxon strives for but fails to achieve.
This interplay represents a genuine intimacy that Chelsea cannot reciprocate. Saxon’s intentions may have initially been romantic, but he finds himself genuinely affected and transformed by her. While there was potential for something meaningful between them, Chelsea instead pursues a more challenging relationship – one with Rick.

Apart from the fact that Chelsea was once a yoga instructor and has a keen interest in astrology, we don’t know much about her personal background. Have you thought of creating a storyline for her past?
Chelsea has always intrigued me with her mysterious demeanor. You can see it in her interaction with Chloe on the boat when she says, “Why is it only about his suffering, his emotions? I have my own pain and feelings too.” Chelsea shares some characteristics with Rick; both are enigmatic and impulsive individuals. My imagination was filled with personal thoughts about Chelsea that were quite profound. Walton and I believe that Chelsea spotted Rick in a bar, approached him, and since then, they’ve been on the move together.
Could you share insights about portraying the act of dying dramatically in film or television? Since it was a crucial scene, what strategies did you employ during its unveiling?
In simpler terms,
The situation was strange. I couldn’t bear the thought of losing Chelsea. It felt like I had to resist, to keep living. That’s why Mike’s words were a relief, as they allowed me to be silent for once. Originally, Chelsea was going to talk about things happening in threes, but Mike changed that so she could just be quiet. Rick understands her – words are her protection, and suddenly that shield is gone. She can’t speak. So he has to look at her honestly for the first time and realizes his love for her. However, it was hard hearing Walton get so emotional. I wanted to stand up and shout, “I’m here!” The moment Mike picked me up, I felt a sense of peace, like I could let go now. This is what Chelsea wants, as Mike is finally doing the work that they both needed. But carrying this intense emotion, especially with Walton crying, was difficult. A tear even slipped out of my eye during that part because I couldn’t respond to the emotions pouring out. It’s unfortunate for Chelsea that Rick expresses his feelings when she can’t respond back.
Even when he’s carrying you and is struck by gunfire, you end up falling into the water together. It must be quite a dance routine you need to remember while being in that mental state. How many attempts did it take to get it right?
On the most sweltering day of filming, Walton found it challenging as he had to lug me around. By the end, we were both drenched in sweat. The stunt supervisors explained that a great deal of trust is required when someone carries you and falls with you. I was the one being carried, while he did all the labor. He repeated that walk numerous times. It seemed fitting as it was finally Rick’s moment to exert himself for Chelsea, alone. Since she wasn’t present to assist him, he had to manage everything on his own. I took great pleasure in being the burden he had to bear. Sorry, dear. Sorry.
Before we part ways, do you happen to have an entertaining monkey tale to share? After all, they truly excelled in their roles this year.
I didn’t spot a single monkey, much to my dismay! I had been eagerly anticipating seeing one, imagining myself saying something like “Here I come, and there it is!” Alas, not a single monkey was to be found. There were plenty of lizards instead. As for the monkeys in the show, they were the first time I’d ever laid eyes on those particular actors. It was such a letdown that I initially thought they were computer-generated images (CGI). To my surprise, they explained, “No, Aimee, those are real monkeys.
