Aimee Lou Wood and Jodie Whittaker had a profound conversation with the women whose lives serve as inspiration for their upcoming Netflix series, Toxic Towns.

I delve deeply into the heart-wrenching tale of the Corby poisonings, a significant environmental catastrophe that left its mark on the UK, as a dedicated follower and researcher.

The story unfolds the poignant accounts of mothers, who relentlessly pursue justice, as their children endured disabilities because of a scandal.

The narrative portrays the heartbreaking stories of mothers who tirelessly seek justice for their children, who developed disabilities due to the scandal.

On the day the series premiered on Thursday, Jodie and Aimee came together for a deeply touching reunion with the real-life moms – Susan McIntyre, Tracey Taylor, and Maggie Mahon.

In reference to the actors, Tracey remarked: “They’ve made everyone proud, they’ve made the children proud as well.

Meanwhile, Aimee, who plays Tracey in the drama, added: ‘I’m so honoured that I got to play you.’ 

In conversation with Aimee, Tracy shared how deeply affected she’s been by the series and discussed the poignant experience of witnessing an actress portray the tale based on her own heartbreaking story about losing her daughter Shelby Anne at four days old.

Overwhelmed with emotion, she expressed her gratitude by saying, “Your actions on Shelby’s behalf have left me indebted. You’ve upheld justice for her and for all of us, an act for which we will always be thankful.

She then went on to open up about Shelby Anne’s birth, which is portrayed in Toxic Town. 

Tracey expressed: ‘Clearly, we were filled with immense joy since it was our firstborn. Shelby was stunningly beautiful. They swaddled her and handed her over to me, and in my eagerness to get a look at her face, I carefully lifted a corner of the blanket. That’s when I spotted that she had an abnormal ear shape.’

They brought her to the specialized newborn care area, where they placed her on oxygen. At this point, the doctor expressed their concern, saying, “To be honest, we suspect there may be a serious issue.

We reached out to the priest who officiated our wedding, asking him to visit and perform a baptism and blessing on her. Subsequently, the doctors returned with the unfortunate news that she was born with only two chambers in her heart instead of the usual four. Consequently, blood is being pumped directly into her lungs rather than her heart.

Tracey disclosed that, even though she begged doctors to perform surgery, they informed her that the likelihood of her daughter surviving was less than 10%.

Due to this unfortunate turn of events, she was faced with a painful choice: removing her child from the life-sustaining machine.

She remembered: ‘We invited my parents to visit our granddaughter and bid farewell, which they did. As parents, we then chose to remove her from life support.

If she could hold out for a short time, we’d provide her with an opportunity to undergo surgery, understanding that numerous follow-up surgeries were likely in her future.

‘If she went, at least she went in our arms lovingly. And she only lasted 5 minutes.’

In various discussions, Maggie, Tracey, and Susan recounted their experiences with the legal case they found themselves involved in.

Susan recalled it as a truly terrifying experience, yet she remained steadfast in her desire to speak the unvarnished truth.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but exclaim: “We were the unsung heroes, and it’s the enchantment woven into this tale!” Then, my heart swells with joy as I recall Tracey saying, “After years of battling, discovering that the judge acknowledged our claims, validating us mothers, was an immense relief. It wasn’t our fault, we didn’t do anything wrong.

Toxic Towns follow the tragic story that captivated the nation.

1980 marked an unfortunate incident for Corby, where it became embroiled in one of the largest child poisonings cases. Exposure to excessive toxic waste during this time resulted in a higher-than-usual number of birth defects, making it the most severe foetal contamination scandal since the thalidomide disaster.

In their effort to clean up the debris, the city authorities unfortunately managed to spread pollution towards inhabited zones, potentially affecting the wellbeing of residents.

Later on, it was taken to court that Corby Borough Council was responsible for a situation where improper waste disposal allegedly resulted in an unusually high rate of infants born with birth defects affecting their upper limbs within Corby.

Alongside Jodie and Amiee, the drama also stars Brendan Coyle, Robert Carlyle, and Rory Kinnear.
